From the Beeb
OK, so I know Blair's a loathsome cretin, but it seems like he's made a special effort of late to bring the whole country round to hating him. What is this shit? We should be closing down the US military installations that are already on British soil, not getting more of the fucking things. |

I definitely agree with the former. I'll disagree with the latter. There are two types of nations. Nations that can only afford to build a few ballistic missles and who can't afford to build preemptive strikes and nations that can afford to but could easily change their strategy to nuclear cruise missles or shorter range systems which would avoid the general missle defense systems. England will be safe ... generally. Ever see the collateral damage when Israel activated its missle defense system? It made a mess for miles and miles. And it doesn't prevent them from getting a plethora of smaller rockets on them. |

Oh, so the North Sea will be full of shit including, possibly, some radioactive material, but hey: Britain will be just fine! Unless of course, y'know, they launch more missiles at you to compensate for your defense shield....so you have shit in the water and shit in your cities. The problem with missile defense shields is it gives a false sense of security - particularly when we consider the scale of multi-thousand missiles being launched in the event of WWIII. Missile defense shields might be more effective to a brain fart from the likes of, say, North Korea (which, let's face it, is a possibility), but it does little to hinder the 5 Permanent members of the security council. The problem is that too many people will play "me so great" politics with such a false security blanket (particularly the populace who don't realize this little problem - and, possibly, this very administration). Further, you take in the possibility of software glitches (one of the most famous software glitches is, actually, the Patriot Missile System which could miss by up to 200 miles because of a compound time calculation error because someone couldn't handle base 2 and HAD to operate in base 10), or nukes that have defense mechanisms for handling incoming missiles or some other stupid trick (common issue today is that nuclear weapons deploy decoys so if your missile goes and attacks the nuke, it isn't sure which of the dozen targets to hit). Missile Defense Shields are like putting up a medieval shield and going "You can't kill me!" then getting hit by an RPG. EDIT: Double checked my research on the Patriot Failure: http://www.ima.umn.edu/~arnold/disasters/patriot.html Correction to earlier comments: missed by half a km. |
