Initiative would require married couples to procreate

I've never been more embarrassed to live in Washington.

Yeah that's embarassing.

Cheryl Haskins, executive director of Allies for Marriage & Children, agreed with Gadow's group on at least one point about the initiative: "It's absurd," she said.

With I-957, "you're dictating people's choices in a way that is utterly ridiculous," she said.

Bizarre stuff.

As a PR stunt, it's already done what they wanted it to do.

So how do "initiatives" work? From the reference to signatures needed I'm guessing it's a way of establishing a law through popular referendum, rather than pushing a Bill through the House. In Australia it's really hard to get a referendum approved; is this initiative thing often successful?

Sure, I could look this up, but it's a lot easier to let our in-house experts explain it.

 That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever read. I had to stop reading because it was making me angry. Maybe I'm just cranky today.

Still....dumbest.thing.ever.
Such amusing fiction, these stories they tell. It always comes to this. If they really had a desire to live, they would've been more aware of how easy it is to die, would've chosen their actions more wisely. In these moments, you can tell they're not regretting having hurt you. They're regretting doing it to your face.

Basically, you have to collect a couple hundred thousand voter's signatures, then it goes on the ballot for the people to vote on in November.

Well, in the last election there were something like 5 of them on the ballot and if I recall correctly most of them passed.

Brilliant

Absolutely ingenious.

Well, that's one argument down, what's next on the list?
No, seriously

Well, in the article, they discussed banning divorce if the couple already has children and forcing unmarried couples with children to be considered married...

Personally, I think that most proactive measures designed to expand civil rights are good ones, and that a sense of humor about the political process can be a major asset.

The problem with PR stunts like this is that there may be enough people who would say, "You know, that actually sounds like a good idea."

Our NationState probably has legislation similar to this, after all. :D
