Unions predict reluctance on Afghanistan
8 February 2006

AMSTERDAM —  Dutch military unions predicted on Wednesday many soldiers will opt out of the latest deployment to the southern province of Uruzgan in Afghanistan.

The AFMP and ACOM unions blamed the high number of overseas missions and moderate pay for the expected reluctance among troops to sign up for the Afghan mission.

Limited enthusiasm among the troops for the last mission cannot be attributed to the potential risks in Uruzgan, the unions said.

"For some this is the seventh, eight time they are being deployed overseas," AFMP chairman Wim van den Brug said. "That is a heavy burden on one's private life."

Van den Brug said the improving economy provided
other opportunities for soldiers in the labour market and the unions expect a number of military personnel to resign their contracts with the Ministry of Defence.

A detachment of troops leaves for Uruzgan in March to build three camps for the main force of 1,200 Dutch troops.

The Ministry of Defence and the military unions have agreed the premium for overtime work will double to EUR 79.52 a day. But the ministry said this had nothing to do wth the expected enthusiasm for the mission.

Military unions? Wouldn't that somewhat undermine the chain of command and does this mean the army could theoretically go on strike?
