Read and weep. As my ACA friend Orgybot commented: how do these people walk down the street without getting punched? |

It's disturbing that these people's views are so widely accepted that they can find outlets willing to give them sufficient exposure to make their names familiar on the other side of the Atlantic. Possibly the most disturbing thing was on a link from one of the Ann Coulter quotes. The airline one sounds more like a satire on the right, like something out of The Simpsons, and yet it's actually been said and meant by a prominent pundit. This kind of thing would most likely get you sacked by any respected British media source. But in America, Coulter had to go as far as this to get fired:

I don't think Britain has anyone as obnoxious and hateful as these wankers. And that's saying something. |

Well, we almost certainly do, but the standards expected by the rest of our society are decent enough that major media outlets won't give them a voice. Plus pretty soon, the wankers in charge will start locking them up anyway, since apparently you still have freedom of speech even if you're not allowed to say bad things. |

Heh. Too true. I should have written "...anyone with a public profile as obnoxious and hateful as these wankers...". Then again, maybe even that isn't true. Oh, well. |

This should read, "2005's Most Outrageous Statements by Republicans". A bit one-sided, don't you think? Last time I noticed, being a moron was an equal-opportunity job. |

Well, Media Matters is hardly impartial. And I like Coulter. She's good for laughs. Few liberals can get past her insane invective to appreciate the true comedic value of it all. |

Oh, I never claimed it was from an impartial source! I positively encourage you to throw back some Democrat horseshit. I'm sure there's plenty about. Ann Coulter - I hope she's going for laughs. I don't want to believe she's an irredeemable cunt. |

That really wasn't necessary. And "smiting" doesn't have an extra "e" in it, unless there's some inside joke I'm not getting. |

Honestly that is what I thought when I read the comment. It wasn't necessary. The same thing could have been expressed differently. Without the ambiguity. All that needed to be said was that the source has an obvious [unashamed?] bias. But the phrasing - specifically the questioning - carried the implication that it was us (as in members of this board) that where unfairly characterising a group of people. We really didn't need to be told. No one was making this into an 'OMG republicans die!!!111' thread.
No, sorry, I'll correct it. |

So this is what we have now for political discourse? Instead of either defending or repudiating the statements of the individuals in the article, it's: "well, the Democrats are just as bad" and "that word under your avatar is spelled wrong"? Personally, I would love to see the collapse of both parties. I'm tired of having to choose between the lesser of two evils (or the evil of two lessers). I'm tired of having to hold my nose while I vote. I'm tired of hearing "so you want to lower taxes? Well that's a great idea, while we're at it let's just outlaw abortion too". I'm tired of hearing "so you support gay rights? Well so do I, let's regulate the hell out of business and shut down these evil corporations". I'm socially liberal, but as I grow older I find myself becoming more economically conservative. Thus, I'm not really "at home" in either party. |
