Farewell, My Friends; Tink's Goodbye

Tink stood at the docks, staring in awe at the large ship which rocked and swayed on the blue water.

"It's time to go, Chiros." she said sadly. Her pocket let out a little squeak, and the dragon inside it lifted his head and nuzzled her hand comfortingly.

She gave him a tiny grin. "It's been fun, hasn't it? I made more friends in Quievere than I ever had in my entire life. I think I even..." She stopped herself before finishing that sentence.

She thought of all the friends she'd made in the last few months: Alex, the strange elf (although she wasn't quit esure if he was a friend or not), Lauri, the little girl she'd adopted for a while - who knew where the cute little brat was now - Illi, Ekki, and that oddly endearing, bumbling minstrel, Ernie. And, of course, Tannie.

She shook her head. 'Stop it. You never get emotional, what's your problem?'

She gazed again at the ship, beginning to stride toward it, her footsteps sounding too loud on the wooden deck. She had it all planned; stow away on the ship, pick a sailor who looked nice and befriend him, and get him to pinch food for her. Although, if she couldn't find a decent sailor, she had no problems with nicking the food herself.

She didn't know where the ship was going. She only knew that it was going far away, and that she'd probably never return to Quievere again.

She turned back in the direction from whence she came, the direction where the town, with its shady, dingy little Drinkin' Place.

"You know better than to look back, Tink." she muttered. "Get going."

But she didn't turn back to the ship, preferring to gaze a little longer into the distance.

"Goodbye..." she said softly, and then went to board the ship.

Tanis teleported to the docks straight after his fight with Lort, he looked around, for some reason he had been drawn here, he looked at the ships, was it really? could it really be?.

He started running, he had left his cloak and hat in at huon shoulder fort so his normal self was showing, his hair had grown in the last couple of weeks so it hid his elven ears a little, which would of been fine if his hair weren't silver, he ran as fast as he could not caring who saw him. He made it to a few metres away.

"Katinka?" He asked, leaning over to catch his breath.

Tink paused, recognising the voice. "Tannie..."

She turned around to look at him, stepping off the gangplank and walking over. "What are you doing here?" she asked softly. Chiros poked his head out of her pocket, smoking, 'T A N N I E !'

"I'm really not good with goodbyes..." she muttered, and put on a huge, fake smile. "So, Tannie! How are you? Long time no see! Well, anyway, got to go, the ship's leaving and I'm...ah...going to board it..."

Nevertheless, she didn't move, glancing up at him.

Tanis was still surprised to see it was her. He answered her by running up and hugging her.

"Please don't go, I don't want to make this hard on you, but I.." He trailed off the words wouldn't come "I...Love you Tink, I don't know wha I'd do without you" he said softly, he still held her, though he realised it would be short lived, sensing that Tink was probably going to slap him for it.

Tink froze, her muscles tensing as Tanis hugged her, but then she relaxed. Then she tensed again when, even more surprisingly, he said those three little words Tink had never expected to hear in her entire lifetime. Instead of slapping him, which she was tempted to do, she buried her face into his chest, holding him as tightly as he held her.

"Tanis..." she whispered. "I have to go...I've spent too long here. But...you know, it's weird...I love you, too."

There. She'd said it. Now she had to say the rest.

"Tannie...I have to leave. You understand, don't you? I'm a thief, I have twenty six contracts on my life...I can't stay in one place long. I was lucky in Quievere, the people must all be thick...But there's nothing here for me anymore. Lort...well, I tried...but when I had him, I couldn't do it. Even though he killed my big brother...I'm such an idiot!"

Grabbing the front of his shirt, she wiped away the tears which had sprung to her eyes. "I'd ask you to come with me, but that wouldn't be fair." she stated bluntly. "And I'd do better on my own, anyway."

She sniffed. "So...this is it..."

He'd said it, she'd said it, they were in each others arms and yet it was goodbye. He closed his eyes, she was crying he...was on the verge of it, somewhere he'd never been before. He rubbed the back of her head.

"I understand it, but I hate it more, as for Lort" he paused, now wasn't the time to say he did what she couldn't "You did get him Tink, I confronted him just earlier to try and find you, because of all that you had done to his pride he impailed himself with his own sword" It was the truth it had happened, it just wasn't how he died.

Tanis thought about what she had said, she was right, he wouldn't last one day in her shoes, it was hard enough here just being a mage and living, and last time he had been sonfronted on that Tink nearly died, it was incredibly safer for her this way, though he hated that fact. he closed his eyes for a second and then opened them ready for what he had to say.

"I'll miss you" he said softly, more in a sorry you have to go way rather than don't leave me. He kissed her on the forehead and released his arms from around her.

Tink stepped away from him. It was definitely time to go. If she didn't leave now, it would get harder and harder to step onto the ship.

"Thanks for everything, Tannie." she said, swiping at the tears running down her cheeks.
She reached into one of her pockets, drawing out something silver and shiny. "Here. Take this."

Taking his hand, she pressed the object into it. It was the first scale Chiros had shed.

She looked back at the ship. "I'd better go. I'll...always remember you."
Nodding, she turned, stepped onto the gangplank and boarded the ship. As soon as she was standing on the deck, she felt a little better.

Glancing back at Tanis, she gave him a sad little smile, and waved.

"Goodbye Tink, I'll never forget you" He said softly, he looked at what she had put in his hand, it was a scale, he looked around he had nothing to giv her, why did he have to go and leave his cloak back at the fort, he looked up realising that she had left.

Tanis waved back, he wondered if she had actually payed or stolen a ticket for this boat or was just stowing away, he took a step back and leaned against a wooden building, he closed his eyes a single tear falling down his right cheek, which was soon followed by more and more.

Tink watched him sadly. Chiros poked his head out of her pocket and nuzzled against her hand again.

The sails unfurled suddenly, snapping in the wind. The anchor was raised, and the ship began to move.

"This is it." Tink said softly to herself. "I'll never see him again..."

Another tear was roughly wiped away, as she stood staring down at the dock.

"Oy! You!"

Tink turned, as a sailor grabbed her shoulder. "What?!" she snapped.

He backed away a step or two. "I...uh...Nothing, don't worry, Miss." He scurried off to do some sailor-ish thing. Or just pretend to look busy.

With a broad grin, Tink turned back to wave at Tanis, and gave him a thumbs up.

She was on her way. Nothing could stop her now.

Tanis waved back again and then closed his eyes, he could feel the tears coming, he was regretting not going with her already, he had oblitterated Lort because he hadn't seen her for a couple of weeks, what would he do now that she was gone forever.

He heard Bolt crying at his feet, he knelt down and picked her up in his arms. "It's ok Bolt" He paused he had nothing left to say, where is the comfort in this, Bolt was missing Chiros, how could he fix it, they had been friends for so long, So had I and Tink he cringed, he didn't want to think about it, he walked away from the pier when the ship disappeared from sight over the horizon, he walked along the busy street, cathcing plenty of attention with his silver hair and dragon in his arms. When he had finally reached the edge of the town he teleported out of the docks, still holding the scale, as he left a single tear fell to the ground.
