Morning Under Empire! I've played Warhammer 40k for a long time now, collecting Tyranids and Dark Eldar, and recently my gaming group has taken up side armies, building up forces for Fantasy. I'm still VERY fresh into the game mechanics, and am still wrapping my head around everything, but I figure I have to choose an army in order to learn it!

I started picking Lizardmen in my head, but the more and more I looked into the armies, the more I fell in love with the vile vermin of the Under Empire. As a Tyranid player, I can appreciate a good horde army, and don't mind at all sitting down to paint a few hundred models.

My group is still buying and assembling their armies: my room mate is picking up Dark Elves, already has some spearmen, wytches, a cauldron of blood, and a hydra, one guy is starting with Dwarves, our lady friend is in Wood Elves, and our resident power gamer is starting up Vampire Counts. already has his beatstick vampire, some screaming bone dragon, and some ethereal coach thing.

I nabbed 3 Warlords for no cost the other day, and I'll be splitting with someone to pick up 2 island of blood boxes from my FLGS to start out my army. So out of experience, what would you guys recommend me picking up that is essential to win (or rather, survive)?

Stormvermin
Welcome to the UE! For new (and veteran) players who have general questions, I HIGHLY recommend Mathusula's guided found here. I mainly covers how to build an army and what should be in it.

Here are a few suggestions:
  • Make sure you have a grey seer. In WFB, not taking a lvl 4 wizard really handicaps you.
  • Take a Battle Standard Bearer. Skaven need him.
  • Take a couple Giant Rat Darts. (5 Giant rats and 1 packmaster running in a 2x3 formation). This is the cheapest unit in the game and are quite useful for its points.

Other than that, it largely comes down to personal preference. Some of the common preference choices are:
  • Stormvermin or plague Monks?
  • Skavenslaves with or without shields?
  • Hellpit Abomination or Double Doomwheel?

Overall, have fun! Don't be afraid to try new and crazy things!
