Do you have to declare if you are scouting them or ambushing them before the game?? Or can I see how the deployment is going and then decide??

I imagine that everyday the Great Horned Rat says to the Council of Thirteen... Good night council. Good work. I'll most likely kill you in the morning.

I usually let my opponents know that I’m deploying scouts before deployment or during deployment just because I’m a nice guy (I play friendly games). But you don’t have to if you don’t want to. Sometimes I don’t say anything, but I might leave my gutter runners sitting with my army in plain view so if my opponent notices then that’s the reward they get for being observant ;)

So yes, you can wait until the deploying is done (characters etc) and then you can ask your opponent, ‘so do you have any scouts?’ if they do then you roll off to see who deploys first, if they don’t then you can use that moment to decide where to put your scouts down. I don’t think you are required to declare them before that point (but I could be wrong).

Does that help?

Yea. As long as there isn't a rule I guess that's what matters. I play nothing but friendly games so we thought the notification ahead of time would be nice, but I also think that I should take advantage of the rules we have and scout them if the opportunity is there. I was planning to scout them against my friend who plays OnG and had 6 warmachines against me in a battle for the pass. I'm not terribly happy with how I deployed that time, but scouting the gutters would have helped significantly.

Be aware that you can deploy them as scouts in the normal way with the distance restrictions OR you can place them anywhere within your deployment zone.

I only mention this because I witnessed the best case of anti-scouting ever. My friend's High Elf army was built around the Lothern Sea Guard and contained lots of scouting. A clubmate decided to try and 'outscout' him with some.... I'm thinking Dark Elves? I forget.

Either way, he placed down some scouts a little ways away from some war machines in the High Elf deployment zone. The High Elves took a few moments to think, then placed his own scouts right in the face of the enemy scouts with a scouting hero in front, followed by two more units of scouts surrounding them. It was pretty neat.

Right. I just shoot for their zone usually. I like to get them all tangled up in their own lines if I can.
