I'm not sure. I've never played Skaven with my WE. But I've only ever lost my mage bus one time (vs daemons) and they were the last to go. Every game an opponent wasted time shooting at my SotT, usually ends well for me, every game my bus was mostly ignored usually went well for my opponent. With a 4++ ward and 2++ versus spells, its a tough nut to crack, and much worse with High Magic protection counters. You cannot catch it in combat, and spells are all but useless. Note that LOS! requires 5 rank-and-file, not including the unit champion. There are usually between 5-8 rank-and-file sisters, so if you do manage to kill a few, the mages no longer get LOS! which can be huge. I'm not sure what you would use to take out even a few sisters, as a good WE player will be destroying 2 war machines per turn, and with many units being scouts & ambushers, they will likely go first. |

And that's part of the reason I disagreed. Skaven can catch the bunker with the Hellpit or Doomwheel. And with most Skaven players using the ubiquitous DW, HPA, 2WLC Rare choices in 2500 points, which does the WE player shoot at? The two cannons which don't really hurt anything but the bunker -- or the two things that can catch and kill anything in an avoidance Wood Elf army? Of course, it's not impossible to figure the jigsaw puzzle out, but it does depend on a number of factors. What I've experienced in some of my WE games is that the WE player generally (correctly) shoots at the Doomwheel and HPA first. This lets me take other solutions, such as Gutter Runners and the Doomrocket, to whittle down the bunker, then take that couple of cannon shots at the bunker, hopefully killing the mage. If it works, win. If it doesn't work, it cost me nothing more than a couple of cannon shots and maybe a unit of Gutter Runners. This also allows the rest of my army to do what it needs to be doing, without seriously taking away from their ability to deal with the rest of the cav. Theoryhammer at it's best, but I felt it was worth delving into a bit to show a different side of the equation. |

Interesting discussion thus far. Skaven Magic vs. Woodies I would say Ruin may be our best bet here due to its slightly longer ranges of spells than Plague offers. The obvious spell is the Dreaded 13th with + Powerscroll saving this until you have drawn out the Woodies scroll. Double Grey Seer means you might get 2 chances of casting this with a high dice Magic phase combined with Warpstone tokens. Other good spells are Scorch and Warplightning. Taking 2 Engineers as Level 1's or 2's to spam Warplightning is a good back up for your Seer and with the Condenser for extra damage output. Another possibility is the Ruby Ring for extra damage all these spells should help reduce the enemy shooting and later on snipe the Elf Cavalry. A Wizarding Warlord has some potential though the randomness of Lores and spells may make him not that effective. Weapons Teams Don't use them vs. Wood Elves as they will die fast.
