Lesson Eight
Black Cloth

Posted Image
Clanrat model as it was left at the end of the previous lesson.

INTRODUCTION
In this lesson, we will highlighting the black cloth.

Rather than following my exact number of stages, I will be asking you to use your judgement in adding highlights to the mix, applying as many layers as you think are necessary.

MATERIALS NEEDED
  • Your plastic Clanrat model, completed to the stage shown above
  • A Size 1 or Standard Brush.
  • A water jar filled with clean, cold water.
  • A palette
  • A sheet of kitchen roll/paper towel. Do not use toilet roll, as it will cause fibres to adhere to the brush.
  • A brightly lit painting area. Either painting on a table near a window, or using a craft lamp with a daylight bulb is ideal.
  • A rag or paper towels for mopping up spillages
  • Tweezers for removing dust and hairs that may adhere to the miniature
  • Paints: As listed, or equivalents as discussed in the Paints & Materials List thread
          GW/Citadel Chaos Black (discontinued)
          Vallejo Game Color Dwarf Skin
          Vallejo Game Color Pale Flesh
          Glaze medium

NOTES ON THIS LESSON'S STRUCTURE
I have structured this lesson slightly differently, as painting black is quite difficult, requiring you to use your eye and judgement rather than following a set of exact ratios.

In the first 5 photographs, I have added increasing amounts of Dwarf Skin to Chaos Black to create highlights. You may need to use more stages—I advise against using less—to achieve your smooth transition from black to warm grey. Follow the rules previously given for painting the brown cloth by painting only the raised edges, painting towards the areas of strongest light, and leaving some of the last layer showing through. Keep the recesses pure black, as otherwise the cloth will begin to look grey rather than black.

You will find it best to mix up workable, thinned amounts of Chaos Black and Dwarf Skin on the palette with a dot of glaze medium in each, adding the Dwarf Skin in tiny amounts to the black.

You must be very sparing when adding the lighter paints to the mix when painting black. It's easy to jump too quickly to an overly bright colour, ruining the transition.

In the final two photographs, I have added tiny amounts of VGC Pale Flesh to the existing mix, and highlighted very sparingly. Once again, you may need more stages depending on how slowly you choose to build up your highlights. You should only be hinting at these highlights, and less is definitely more.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Once the miniature is dry, take a good close-up picture of your model, and upload it here for comments and criticism by 23 August 2013. I will need the pictures to be clear and bright so that I can see how tidy your brushwork is. Store the model in a drawer or box away from sunlight and dust.

Interesting that you use fleshtones for the highlights.
I never would have thought about it, but now I see it explained it sure makes sense.
It looks like a hard step, I imagined you can very easily ruin it by having too much colour or highlights in and lose the black appearance.
Looking forward to it.

Both lessons done.
Just waiting for my laptop. To come back and I can upload
Jona was right. It is very easy to add too much colour and spoil the black.

I've been taking it a little too slow I think, as after a fair bit more than five stages my model still needs some sharp highlights to really make it pop.
Just throwing the work in progress in here in case you already have any comments. I'm qutie satisfied with it so far, although at some points the result is rather streaky/blotched. I think I'm still struggling to find the right amount of glaze medium, as I found the paint going a little sticky near the end, even though I was using a fair bit of water and a wet palette.

Jona. Looks great. I personally wouldn't add anymore highlights.

Ratt Baron. Looks great too. Maybe another stage of highlights just to make it pop would be nice but not essential.

Sorry I haven't been on top of the replies lately but I have been so busy.

I maybe a day late with my homework this cycle. Very sorry not much I can do. I cut my right forefinger cooking and its annoying and very clumsy to hold a brush at present.
If that excludes me, so be it. I just thought I should let you know Hannanibal.

Hmmm, now I'm in doubt. I'll have another look at it in a couple of days and decide then whether I'm adding one or two extra layers or not.
Thanks for the feedback, though!
