Master Class 1 Clanrat: Start to Finish with Hannanibal Lesson Seven Bandages, Stitches and Metal ![]() Clanrat model as it was left at the end of the previous lesson. INTRODUCTION In this short lesson, we will complete the bandages, the stitching and the metal. We will use edge highlighting to highlight the metal. MATERIALS NEEDED
BANDAGES & STITCHES: INITIAL HIGHLIGHTS Thin some Dheneb Stone, and highlight the bandages. Use thin, flicking strokes for the bandages' highlights. Don't try to highlight each one: just a few selective highlights will suffice. If your model has stitches, paint them with Dheneb Stone as well. Leave the model to dry before moving onto the next stage. ![]() BANDAGES & STITCHES: INTERMEDIATE HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE BANDAGES & SHADING THE STITCHES Mix 50/50 Dheneb Stone and Dead White and highlight the bandages again. Be even more sparing this time. Very carefully shade the stitches with a fine detail brush and Strong Tone Ink. Leave to dry before moving onto the next stage. ![]() BANDAGES & STITCHES: FINAL HIGHLIGHTS Highlight the bandages and the stitches with pure white. Highlights must be extreme and sparing. Leave the model to dry before moving onto the next stage. ![]() PRINCIPLES OF EDGE HIGHLIGHTING To highlight the metal areas, we will use a technique called edge highlighting. This technique uses mostly the flat of the brush rather than the point, and creates sharp, thin highlights which work especially well on metal. To highlight the edges of armour, blades, and other metallic objects, first thin the paint to a useable consistency. Then, load up the paint onto a fine detail brush, and wipe off the excess paint. Run the flat of the brush along the edge you wish to highlight. When I say "edge", I mean the sharp point where two flat edges of metal meet. If you cannot run the flat of your brush along an edge--for instance, if the edge isn't raised enough or there is a risk of getting paint onto other parts of the model--simply use a small, quick flick motion of the brush tip to hint at a highlight. When highlighting metal, it's important not to go overboard and outline every single possible edge. Usually a tiny highlight here and there will work much better than a lot of highlights all over the place. Think about the highlights and only highlight were the light would fall. METAL: EDGE HIGHLIGHTING Edge highlight the metal with Shining Silver. Be sparing. You can also hint at some sharper metal on the blade by creating diagonal slash marks. Do this by flicking the brush from the centre of a blade toward the edge. If you choose to do this, make sure all the strokes travel in the same direction, but are of varying lengths and increments along the blade, so that they don't appear too uniform. ![]() PHOTOGRAPHY Once the miniature is dry, take a good close-up picture of your model, and upload it here for comments and criticism by 9 August 2013. I will need the pictures to be clear and bright so that I can see how tidy your brushwork is. Store the model in a drawer or box away from sunlight and dust. I'm looking forward to it. Is there any particular reaon why you only use the additional shading for the stitches (for now)? I understand it wouldn't work on things like the skin and the cloth, as those are larger surfaces and don't have the starkly defined creases stitches have. The bandages, on the other hand, seem to have quite sharp edges, so intuitively I'd give them some additional lining as well. Is there any particular reason you don't? |

@Jona. For now it's because the stitches haven't been painted at all so need a bit of definition to start with. I have checked the future lesson plans and I have a "tidying up" stage for the whole model and we'll be adding extra shading there if the bandages require it but it's only if you really think they need it. Just an FYI for my photo's. They really don't show up the highlighting of the bandages all that well as the light was steadily failing and my setup wasn't ideal. I'm going to include a mention of it in future lessons as looking through, the OSL lesson's photo's look awful, really harsh and bleached with strong, ugly contrasts and people would be best off not looking at them or at least not using them as a standard to set themselves by. |

Hi Hannanibal, only just picked up on the Master Class (been away from the tunnels for too long) and I would like to say well done and thanks, an inspiration to us all to strive to improve our painting skills. Any plans to piece it all together as a pdf once complete? Keep up the excellent work |

I'm not really happy with this step. The bandages are okay I think (though not of the quality of the skin), but the edge highlights are too rough for my liking. I think my paint consistency wasn't right, probably too thick. Any other tips or remarks, or an easy way to fix this? Left side Back Right side Front |

Cheers mate, and that's a great idea about the PDF. @Jona. The metallic paint does tend to pull if it's not thinned enough. Glaze medium and drying retarder can help sort this problem but for such a small amount of edge highlighting I don't usually bother. I think if you wait until the end and see it in the context of the completed miniature you will see that it looks fine. If you are really that unhappy with it you could always start again from basecoat-> wash-> rust-> edge highlights but that is only a last resort and once again, I'd wait until the whole miniature is completed before deciding whether to do so. I think it looks great. The bandages are top notch. Edited by hannanibal, 31st July 2013 - 01:19 PM.

Okay, I'll do that. I also made the mistake to pick a much smaller brush than my Winsor and Newton 1, but in retrospect I think it has a less fine tip even though it's only a quarter as big. I should have stuck to the wonderbrush I guess. Thanks for the feedback! Edited by Jona, 31st July 2013 - 04:24 PM.

Not bad mate. I think we could do with some more contrast in the bandage folds and elsewhere but we will get to that in the "tidy up" lesson. I think the metal looks OK but if it was me I'd edge highlight it a little more as the blade doesn't look like it has a cutting edge. Anyway, I'll mark you down as done! |
