24-Hour Painting & Hobby Challenge
Honoring Golden Rat Winner Sleboda's Birthday

Rules and Information

Saturday, July 20-Sunday, July 21
Beginning at Noon CDT (Sleboda's Time Zone)

The ancient Romans celebrated their victors with gladiatorial contests and other violent spectacles. The Painting & Hobby moderators of the UnderEmpire are just as desirous of celebrating the winners of the Golden Rat for Skaven Army of the Year, but have chosen to do so in a rather less bloody way, in the painting arena. Every year, following the awarding of the Golden Rat, the most recent winner of the Army of the Year Competition will be offered the opportunity to set the date for a 24-Hour Painting & Hobby Challenge to be held in his honor and announced on his birthday. This challenge will be announced on the winner's birthday rather than held on it because:
  • Golden Rat winners do have friends and families with whom they might wish to spend their birthdays;
  • Birthdays will often fall midweek, when holding a 24-Hour Challenge is generally inconvenient;
  • It seems only appropriate to allow the honoree to pick the date, so that he will have the opportunity to participate in the challenge celebrating his achievement.
As per Sleboda's request, the 24-Hour Challenge will begin officially on Saturday at noon, Central Daylight Time. Here are the official start times for a few of the locations where UnderEmpire members live:
24-Hour Painting & Hobby Challenge: Start Times Worldwide
Saturday July 20 unless specified
Central Time Zone (US & Canada) - noon CDT
Eastern Time Zone (US & Canada) - 1 pm EDT
UK - 6 pm BDT
Netherlands/Belgium - 7 pm CEST
Eastern Australia - Sunday, 4 am AEST
In order to accommodate the UnderEmpire's worldwide nature, we'll be opening the Challenge thread approximately four hours before the official start and closing it at least four hours after the official close. Participants will still only be allowed to work on the Challenge for 24 hours, but this will give people a little more flexibility while permitting everyone to be working together worldwide for at least the central 16 hours of the 24-Hour Challenge.

The aim of any Painting & Hobby Challenge is to encourage people to devote a real chunk of time to working on their hobby, in this case, concentrated within a 24-hour period. This is supposed to be a fun way to get people into a painting spurt: the points you earn in the Challenge are really bonuses, cumulative with whatever you earn from Painting Vows and various competitions. Note that the Challenge is not a competition: you're working individually to see how much you can accomplish, and it has nothing to do with whatever anyone else may accomplish. In Challenges, if you get anything done, you're a winner, and we're all rooting for each other to do as well as possible.

Taking Part

To join in the event, take of a photo of the models you are going to assemble and/or paint on top of a newspaper from the current day (with the date shown in the photo). If you don't have a newspaper, you can improvise by taking the photo in front of your PC, with the screen showing the start page of the event.

Once you have entered you can paint whenever you like, for however long as you like. Some might attempt the full marathon, while others might just do a few hours. Each time you start a new patch of hobby activity, take a photo at the start and at then another when you finish. This is a sort of 'logging in and out'. Let us know how many hours (in quarterly hour increments) you did in the session, as well as how many vow value points (V.V.P.s) you completed (see painting vows for details).

In the thread's initial post, we will keep a log of how much time you have completed, as well as V.V.P.s and your current number of P.R.S. points collected. It will be in the following format:

Name: # hours\V.V.P.s completed\current P.R.S. points collected

Example:

Scarfester: 7.25\26\3
Code:

[b]Scarfester[/b]: [color=red]7.25[/color]\[color=yellow]26[/color]\[color=green]3[/color]
So in this example Scarfester has painted for a total of 7 and a quarter hours, completed 26 V.V.P.s and has currently earned 3 P.R.S. points.

We will keep these running totals updated as the Challenge goes on!
Just make a log in and log out post for each session and we will monitor your progress.

Note that you do not need to start the event at the very beginning, but can join in when you like and go through the end of the Challenge. (We don't wish to exclude people)!

The main thread for the Golden Rat Winner's Birthday 24-Hour Painting & Hobby Challenge will be posted on Saturday, July 20, 2013.

---

Earning P.R.S. Points

P.R.S. points are earned both for the work you do (as measured in V.V.P.s) and for the time you spend. So you will collect a P.R.S. point for every 10 V.V.P.s you complete, as well for the total time you've devoted to your hobby during the week, as shown below:

6 hours - 1 P.R.S. point
12 hours - 3 P.R.S. points
18 hours - 5 P.R.S. points
24+ hours - 6 P.R.S. points

---

Feel free to post your questions in this thread and we will use it as an FAQ of sorts.

FAQ

In order to compete in this 24-Hour Painting & Hobby Challenge, do you first have to have a basic monthly Painting Vow that you're working towards?

No, the 24-Hour Painting & Hobby Challenge is completely separate from the Painting Vows; but as long as you're participating in the weekly challenge, you might as well make a Painting Vow and get the extra P.R.S. points for the work you're doing.

Do you have to post a picture of what you're going to attempt to get done each time?

Yes. You will need to take a photo of what you are aiming to get done, to prove that you have done your work within the Challenge period. If you are taking photos of models you are going to assemble, be sure to take them of the sprues rather than the box.

With every entry, we need clear evidence that the models have been done in the time frame. Take your photos either on top of the newspaper from that day, or with the first post of the entry thread onscreen in the shot. All subsequent shots should include the newspaper or screenshot as well.

Yay! I love these 24-hour challenges, I usually get more done in one day than the rest of the year combined. :D

When you say that the challenge will go on for a week do you mean each person can choose one 24-hour period in the week or can we just keep going all week? (Which I guess is technically a 7 day challenge but still, the first 24-hours of the challenge are the really fun part! :) )

The references to a week is probably remains from the previous week-long challenges. It's less work for Olorin to copy the rules from the previous challenges and edit them than to write it all new every time. :)

This looks fun, but I think I am busy either celebrating some friends' birthdays or enduring life the day after, so I'll probably miss out this time. Have fun!

Git-Git, you're right! I've fixed the errant references. But you know what's really embarrassing? I wasn't even basing this off the rules for the 7-Day Challenge, but off the ones derived from the 7-Day Challenge for the 13-Day Challenge, which means that those were wrong, too: they were up for two weeks back in April, and none of us noticed!

Sorry about that. My fault, obviously: neither Skrits nor anyone else had anything to do with it. And whatever you like about the rules comes from Scarfester: he invented these.

Git-Git, if you just win the next Golden Rat, it will allow you to set the date....

But even aside from Golden Rat winners' birthday celebrations, I hope we'll be having more 24-Hour Challenges in the future.

Unfortunately I won't be able to participate, but I'll keep working on my monthly vows. Best of luck everyone, I'll try to join the next one.
Sigmar may have risen, but the Horned Rat has ascended as well!

Clan Skab has been stepped on long enough. Rise-fight and claim-take what is ours-ours!
Clan Mors will seize the opportunity and expand its hold on the Realms.
Clan Rictus plans to unleash its horde of Stormvermin through the Realmgates.

It's 3:38 am Chicago time.

Who else is getting their mind, body and figures prepared for the 24-hour challenge?

Sleboda,

Weirdly enough, given that I'm running it but not actually painting, I am. I woke up in the middle of the night, and worked on the Challenge thread that will be going up a few hours early. I still haven't gotten back to sleep, which I really should.

We're allowing people to begin early mostly so that our Aussie and Kiwi members will be able to get in the full challenge, and then get some sleep before going back to work on Monday--if UE members in Auckland started the challenge at noon on Saturday, US Central Time, that works out to 6 am on Sunday in New Zealand, so they'd be finishing at 6 am on Monday and would then have to get to work or school in a few hours. (This is winter for them, remember, so no one there is off for summer vacation.) For a weeklong challenge, none of this would matter, but with such a brief challenge period, we don't want to do anything that might encourage people to put their jobs in jeopardy, so we're trying to be flexible.

Actually, that's not totally true....I'm expecting Ebay arrivals today and if they come I'm going to paint one of those instead of the miniatures I have planned but anyway.
