Announcing The UnderEmpire's New Master Class Series Clanrat: Start to Finish with Hannanibal Beginning 4 May 2013 The moderators of the UnderEmpire's Hobby Tunnels are delighted to announce a new regular series of Master Classes. Most of the features that we have now are designed to encourage either creativity or diligence or both. Creativity and diligence are both needed, but there's also a real need for technique. Right now, we offer competitions, and P.R.S. points, and banners, and encouragement, but we don't really offer anything to help people directly in improving their painting and modeling skills. Our aim is to change that. The Master Classes, led by distinguished members of the UnderEmpire, will be designed to teach technique through a series of lessons working on a given project. The teacher will post the lesson, and then the students will follow it, posting up their homework for comments; then, the teacher will post the next lesson, etc. The first course, with Hannanibal as our Master Teacher, will focus on a basic Clanrat model, taking us from the very beginning to the very end. In the future, I hope we'll do Master Classes on sculpting, and freehand painting, and various other aspects of the hobby. Since the techniques learned will really be applicable to all races and games, it is our hope is that our Master Class series will ultimately draw non-Skaven players to check out the UnderEmpire, although naturally, all of our lessons will focus on Skaven. For Hannanibal's first lesson, he'll do cleanup and assembly, and then go from there with additional lessons, with the base being completed last of all. Like all of our Master Classes, this course was designed and planned by the instructor, and it is Hannanibal who will decide how long the course should go. Lessons will be posted every two weeks on a Saturday, and students will be required to post their homework by the day before the next lesson begins. The Master Class will be run a bit like an online RPG, with people signing up, and with deadlines for each lesson to be completed and posted, so that the instructor can then make his comments. Note that this is a class, so polite, constructive criticism should be expected and accepted. You can hear "Great job, man!" anywhere, but you need to hear what you're doing wrong in order to learn how to do something right. It's part of the course, and if you can't take criticism in any form and allow it to be helpful to you, a Master Class probably isn't for you. People will be free to come and go as they please, but if they don't meet the deadlines, they can't then expect the class to double back for them. When each course is over, the actual instructions will be sorted out and edited, and posted separately in our updated Tutorials section. For those of you who were wondering what the students' Clanrats should look like at the end of the Clanrat: Start to Finish Master Class, here is the finished model as completed by Hannanibal (which, admittedly, some of us might not live up to): ![]() I myself plan to participate as a student, and I hope you'll join me. Almost every Skaven player has a spare Clanrat model lying around somewhere, and the chance to take it from beginning to end, following Hannanibal's techniques, and with his advice and criticism, step by step, is a rare opportunity. Being able to take a Master Class is its own reward, but additionally, we are offering 1 P.R.S. point for every three lessons completed on time, with 1 additional P.R.S. point for any student who completes every lesson in the course on time. Please sign up for the course here in this thread. To me, this sounds like one of the (if not the) best thing you guys have done here in the Hobby Tunnels, and your previous ideas have turned out great already! I'd like to sign up already, for this one and any that will follow. PS: Any idea yet who will be giving the other classes? Or is that to remain secret? Edited by Jona, 14th April 2013 - 11:10 AM.

In a day or two, we're going to put up a thread with a photo of the Clanrat that Hannanibal is using. You can use any Clanrat, either from the regular Clanrats box or from The Island of Blood, but since some people want to try to follow him as exactly as possible, we're putting up a photo of the Clanrat sprue with the exact body and arm that he's using circled in red. This initial post will also include a materials list, with all of the paints and other items that Hannanibal is using. Again, you won't have to follow exactly, and in some cases you probably won't be able to, since he'll be using several different brands of paint, including the old GW paints that were discontinued a year ago. However, you'll be able to ask questions about substitutions, and Hannanibal will be happy to answer them. |

Work is crazy right now with setting a whole new year end project up, but I think I might be able to manage this, though I probably won't be able to do them all. Specifically, this line...
Grabbed me, I want my techniques to be torn apart so I can learn to do better work (possibly faster). I've always reacted better to negative reinforcement than I have to positive. And since I have a limited number of paints, I'm going to have try and do a lot of mixing more than I normally would to fall in line with Hannibal. --Cap Edited by CapAmr05, 14th April 2013 - 04:10 PM.

Jona, sorry, I meant to answer this in an earlier post, but I got distracted. Skrits and I have some ideas for other classes, but one thing that we do know is that there will never be more than one Master Class running at any given time. The whole thing would not be feasible any other way. What comes next will depend largely on the right teacher for the right course being available at the right time. As Hannanibal's course winds down--and that will be months away--we'll set up the next Master Class, but we're not going to announce it until it's ready. It's not so much that it's secret as that we don't want to jump the gun. We've been working with Hannanibal on setting up this course since February (we asked him to keep it confidential until the announcement), and Skrits and I had been talking about holding some kind of master class almost since the time that Skrits was elected to the Council. Although Skrits and I have both worked as educators teaching in actual physical classrooms, neither of us has ever organized or participated in anything like this online Master Class series before, so I'm sure we'll learn a lot from this one. It should be an awfully big adventure. And that is exactly why we decided that there should be two weeks between each lesson! But even if you do miss it, it's just one lesson, so you should be able to catch up. Edited by Olorin the Ancient, 14th April 2013 - 06:54 PM.
