November-December 2012 Painting Competition Entry Thread Category: Scenic Imperative CATEGORY INFORMATION Submit a photo or photo montage of a Skaven tower designed to be used with the unofficial rules for a Skaven Watchtower as printed in the hardcover Warhammer Rulebook, Eighth Edition, page 401. This building could also then be used for the standard scenario, Battle 6: The Watchtower, on page 150. Alternatively, you can create any other piece of Skaven scenery. As always, this model must be fully painted and based. ENTRY RULES - Each entry shall consist of a photo or photo montage of models built and painted specifically for this painting competition. There must be no images of an entry on this site or anywhere on the web, so that the competition may remain anonymous. (We all wish to be judged by our work, rather than by who we are. Asking voters to select their favorite models without knowing who created them is a step towards achieving that goal.) - If you have already created a model that fits this category, and it is therefore ineligible, you may post it instead to the OUTSIDE THE COMPETITION Thread. - The image or photo montage for each entry is to be hosted on either a Photobucket or Flickr account. Please use one of these two free services: they both work. - We will only post one image of the completed model per entry, but photo montage images are fine. You can do a search for "create photo montage free" to learn how to make a photo montage of your images. - We may post a second image file or photo montage of your model if it has been scratch-built or converted, and the second image or photo montage shows the model in its original unprimed state. Simple kit-bashes of grey plastic parts don't really show up well, but where different materials are involved (plasticard, metal rods, green stuff, etc.), those photos can be invaluable to let people know what part of the model was created by Games Workshop, and what part was created by you. - Here is a thread on the Warseer website with tips from other hobbyists on how to take good photos of your miniatures. - Please keep the images to a maximum width of 900. Plan on a height of no more than 600 if you want your image to fit on screen at a resolution of 1268 x 780 without people having to scroll down. Scrolling down is not as bad as scrolling sideways, particularly for a photo montage, but a single entry should not take up more than two screens. Therefore, the maximum allowable height for an image is 1200. So consider 900 x 1200 to be the largest image you can submit for this competition. We may resize images that do not comply. Giant Scrolling Pictures of Doom are no fun! - Don't be too small, either. People don't vote for models that they can't see. If your entire image or photo montage is less than 600 wide or 300 high, you should probably enlarge it. Compose your images carefully, and crop them appropriately, so that there is nothing cut off, but also no extraneous white space. We should be able to see your entire unit in one single shot, with additional shots, if used, showing us other angles or individual models. - People are not judging your models, they are judging your photographs of your models. Therefore, it would be helpful for you to know something about photography. Get a tripod, use the macro setting on your digital camera and use a slow shutter speed if possible. Look at the critiques of photos made in the voting threads for earlier competitions. Blurry entries always lose, regardless of the skill of the painter. Having more megapixels on your camera isn't the solution when it comes to images on screen. A cheap but decent digital camera will take better pictures of miniatures than the most advanced phone. Remember, nobody here can see your model: we can only see the images you send us. It makes no difference how good your painting skills are, unless the quality shows up on the computer screen. - Please don't put your name on the image, as entries are supposed to be anonymous! The image won't be used if it has your name on it. - Every entry needs a title. Please include a caption in your PM so we can label your entry properly when the voting thread goes up. - To enter, please send your image fitting the category via PM to Olorin the Ancient. If your submission hasn't been acknowledged after several days, it probably hasn't been received; send it again. - There is a maximum of 15 entries per month, as that's how many options we are allowed to include in a poll. The first fifteen entries which meet all the requirements will make it into the competition; first come, first served. If you are the sixteenth person to send in a valid entry, you won't get in. However, if your entry is completed and you see that the competition appears to be full, you might as well make your submission anyway, since it's always possible that one of the earlier entrants will be disqualified and a slot will open up. - You may send in your entries up until December 24, 2012. - In the early morning of December 25, 2012 (yes, I am working for the UnderEmpire on Christmas!), entry will close, and we will open a poll with all the images received so voting can begin. Please note that anyone with Slave status (less than 25 posts) will not be able to vote in the poll. See here for details. - The voting may begin earlier if we receive all fifteen entries before the 24th, or later if we don't get enough entries in time. - Voting will end on December 31, 2012. - It goes without saying that the models whose photos you submit must be entirely your own work, though you may get others to take and edit the photographs, if you wish. Submitting other people's work as you own will get you banned. - See HERE for a list of all the painting competitions for the year. --- Number of Entries received so far - 4/15 We will try to update this tally as entries are received, so that you will know how many places are still available. This is also the thread for competition discussion. Good luck! --- PRIZE The top three entries gain a place in the Painting Competition Gallery of Fame , which showcases the first, second and third place-winning models for all of our competitions. Entering the competition will earn you a point towards your painting rank system (P.R.S.) total, whether you place in the top three or not! The first three places will also earn additional P.R.S. points as follows: 1st Place - 5 points 2nd Place - 3 points 3rd place - 2 points --- LAST COMPETITION Category: Go Big or Go Home Winner Overlord Dror, "Throt's Other Pet (Hell Pit Abomination)" Edited by Olorin the Ancient, 23rd December 2012 - 03:12 AM.

I'd just like to remind everyone that we've got a really great competition going on this month. We have only one entry so far, so it's time to get moving! Remember that while a Skaven watchtower is suggested, any piece of Skaven-themed scenery is eligible, provided that it hasn't previously been posted online. |

You have less than a week to get in your entries for the last regular painting competition of 2012. We need at least three entries in order to run this thing, and you'll find, if you build it, that this is a tremendously useful piece of scenery to have, great for multiple scenarios, and a wonderful way to add character to your gaming boards and your display board. Remember, the scoring guidelines for the Golden Rat for Skaven Army of the Year do reward people with nice display bases. I'll extend the December 24 deadline if I have to, but once we're in January, we're going to have those Golden Rat deadlines, so I'd rather not postpone it by too much. Take advantage of this competition: build a piece of Skaven scenery for your board. Remember, according to the rules, it doesn't even have to be a watchtower, just a piece of Skaven terrain. Make something... there's still time. You'll be glad you did! You can PM me privately, if you like, to let me know that you're planning to enter. |

I am relieved. There's three days left until the deadline, and we now have enough entries to run the competition on-time as scheduled. If you're going to enter one more hobby contest for all the rest of 2012, this is the one to pick! |
