Greetings, honored Warlords. I could use your wisdom. Last night I finished painting my first ten Skaven (slaves, if you're curious). I'm pretty happy with how they came out but I haven't touched the bases yet. My intent is to get some of the little clumped marsh grass from GW and some water effect to make the bases look like a wet bog, kind of like the Dead marshes in The Two Towers. I could really use some advise on what colors to use underneath the water effect stuff and also on the sides of the bases themselves. |

Hmmm, dark greens, dark blues and browns. You could paint it in random patches and once covered by the water effects it should look like there's lots of stuff going on at the bottom. Just make sure to keep them very dark or it might end up looking weird. Or it might end up looking weird anyway, best to test it out on a spare base. |

Just my thoughts, I wouldn't use water effects on the bases. It's messy as hell and takes ages to dry and would be especially fiddly on the hundreds of slaves and clannies you'll be getting through. If you leave a patch of base free of sand, paint it green and highlight it light green in the centre and then add a touch of gloss varnish over it it will look like a boggy puddle and be about 1000 times less of a mess-on than using water effects. Sorry for the thread hijack but it looks like this:

whatever you decide make sure you pay attention to how it contrasts or matches the model. A lot of skaven players, including me, have used colors for the base that are too close to the model. Stay away from browns if that's how you painted your rats. It will end up looking like a brown mess otherwise. |

Thanks, friends. I'll have to check back from home tonight. For some reason almost none of the images and graphics on this forum show up for me at work (damned firewalls) so i can't see the example posted. I'll toss one up here myself when i get one done. |
