I have designed (for the most part) a Scurvy army, replacing all the vehicles with ships that are either wheeled, carried or dragged. One of my hell pits is a fish tank on wheels wheels with tentacles reaching out and eyes peering through. My mortar team uses warp stone corrupted coconuts, my doomwheel is a doom-paddle-steamer ect.. I has came across a problem, I am designing a Pirate ship like the ones described in the army book (the black pox was one of em), that could house my entire scurvy horde. I was thinking of using a frigate model and modding it into a masterpiece. This would be a fluff piece (something that would chill in the deployment area like folding fortress) as i don't see anyone wanting to go into the field against such a formidable force. I have no idea what scale to look for seeing as warhammer don't scale vehicles the same as infantry. ..also I have read some where that some skaven Clans (or units) don't like water/ the sea. I Have no idea what Units those are but would be awesome someone else knows. Edited by Admiral rotte, 13th September 2012 - 01:52 PM.

by design.. i mean design, i have detailed schematics for every model in a 3000 point army, and know how to build each mod and what each unit composition will be..but money is the problem (engineering student). My mates an I have resigned ourselves to paper warhammer battles for the last year and a bit. But i'm getting a scholarship in the next month or two, which means i can start building and painting. The hell pit will be one of the first creations though, plan on having a dwarf walking the plank into the tank. Uploading pics to this forum will be the first thing i do. |

To my mind the core units for Skaven as long as they belong to one of the seafaring Clans are quite happy around water and the open sky (without suffering as much from the common Skaven agoraphobia.) In regards to other units: Night Runners and Gutter Runners - can be used as Skurvy Deck Runners and Rigging Runners (Same units just make them Skurvyish.) Rat Swarms and Giant Rats - While most rats flee a leaking ship, some don't. ![]() Weapon Teams - Make these if possible as Pi-rat as you can perhaps a swivel deck gun as a ratling gun. Globadiers - Perhaps bomb carrying Pi-rats. Plague Monks - Difficult to say, but these could be rats that have been driven insane by Scurvy or other common ship diseases. Rat Ogres - Not very common on any ships but perhaps used as galley slaves. Warp Lightning Cannon - As itself or a Skavenised ship cannon. Plague Claw Catapult - Again difficult to say but perhaps as a catapult loaded with the messy remains of the most diseased Skurvy rats. HPA - As you are. Doom Wheel - As you are. (Note: don't forget to inform your opponent what each unit is. )As for your ship itself, you could make a minor fleet if you have the time/money/patience or settle for one reasonably sized one and assume the others are anchored elsewhere. At sea, massive ships are not generally in keeping with the Skaven fighting style of striking quick and fleeing as soon as the enemy tries to fight back. Larger hulk-like ships are instead used by Skurvy and other water clans for transport of Black Corn around the marshes of Skavenblight. Since Skaven usually loot and 'improve' their ships from other races (mostly stupid man-things) you can research and base your ship/s off of Medieval to Renaissance shipping to gauge a look and rough size. I'd say the more common Skaven ship would be roughly an 18 gun Ship of the Line up to perhaps a 32 depending how much the Captain likes his guns. ![]() Also you can use Mordheim rules or your own invented rules should you wish, and have ship to ship battles and boarding raids. I believe there was one in an old White Dwarf (during the Bugman's Lament gaming saga) that may have been issue 300. Hope this has helped and welcome to the Under Empire! ![]() |

Thanks heaps, i was unsure if there was any units i couldn't use even with fluff. At the moment i have to ogres holding the ships cooking pot between them and the cooks as crew (for the catapult), plague furnace is a Chinese junk, giving all the clan pestilens an oriental look and my globaiers are decked out in old fashioned diving suits throwing jellyfish and squids. I will have a flotilla made up of all the vehicles and largish units but was wanting to make larger ship like the legendary Black Pox. I was hoping on using a french frigate model and saying is was stolen from the bretonian fleet or an English gun ship as a stolen empire ship. The time frame i'm looking at is in the 1800's the Napoleonic wars for my models. The more gun ports the ship has the more interior modding i can do, the idea with the ship was that because my clan spend soo my time on the sea, there nest has to be a boat. I also like the idea of an empire ship sailing through the mist, only to reveal a rag tag fleet of scurvy with this mountainous ship towering above all, the last thing they see is 100+ warpstone cannonballs. got to fin a copy of that white dwarf, also try to remember what one had the custom unit building rules. oh and for rat ogre units i'm making battle suits that are pretty much skaven dreadnoughts, and modding ogres to look more skryre like but with ship parts embedded in them.. I picked up Zvezda's Black Pearl pirate ship model a while back to try and use for a shipwreck terrain piece with my Lustrian Vampire Coast gameboard project, but the 1/72 scale seems like its just a shade too small for 28mm. It's an awesome plastic model (a bit expensive), but unless you scratch-build something yourself, I haven't seen one that would really work better for a Warhammer project... unless one is prepared to spend hundreds of dollars. My Pearl is still in drydock in the box, alas, but if you wanted to check it out for scale comparison I could try and get some pics up later. |

I'm surprised that so far, no one has mentioned the Skaven ship Skabrus, which was part of the limited-edition Dreadfleet board game released by Games Workshop a year ago. It's a smaller scale model, and therefore not usable with regular Skaven figures, but it could provide inspiration.

Technically speaking the that one is really Undead Skaven. So there's a question if it's appropriate for live Skaven. |

I'd forgotten about the Skabrus. This would be an amazing project to do in 28mm scale. I wonder if there are any large action figures/toys that could be used for the leviathan to start with? Another good source of inspiration for a nautical Skaven army is the one Chris Peach (I believe) did on the GW site back when the Uniforms and Heraldry of the Skaven book came out last year. It was a yellow Clan Skurvy army with mini rats in lookout barrels atop banner poles and stormvermin decked out with hooks and eye patches. Really one of the coolest clan-themed armies I've seen. |

I never really liked the Skabrus. The WLC batteries are certainly in keeping with Skavenkind, but I can only see a Clan like Moulder or a Black Seer using a dead or still just about living leviathan. To me it also defeats the object in my mind of how a Skaven fleet would fight. Fast ships that nip in close, rake the enemy with a salvo and retreat back before being shot to matchwood, and rinse and repeat. Having a giant sea monster corpse will just make the Skaven have to adopt a slower almost Dwarfen tactic of fighting and I can't see the Skabrus easily outrunning enemies that are chasing it (despite Captain Halfdead's special rule. ) I also can't understand how a Skurvy fleet managed to get a giant Screaming Bell probably as big if not bigger than the bell that started it all, and have it made out of Warpstone. |

The Skabrus is not the norm for a Skaven ship; the background is that it was a normal Skaven-looted boat that was swallowed by the orb leviathan, the Skaven crew tried to eat their way out of the creature but perished within it, not before killing it though. When Count Wossisname came across the husk and resurrected it he inadvertently brought back the Skaven inside too who then set about modding the creature in their unlife. So not a typical Skaven vessel However the warp lightning cannon batteries and the warp engines are probably more characteristic of standard ships.@Ratty: The bell was probably part of the original ship and most likely glowing rather than constructed entirely from warpstone

A Black Seer first appeared in the mini novel "The Hour of Shadows" by C.L.Werner. The term I suppose can be loosely used for any Skaven (whether former Grey Seer or not) who openly practices necromancy. Oh and @ Matik, the GW description has it as a Warpstone forged bell. Though quality of Warpstone isn't mentioned.
