first shots of the desert rats, there is an army blog on them but posting an example here for paint specific comments

this is very much Work in Progress, the facial details, claws etc have not yet been started, the warp stone has just had a wash coat and has a lot more still to do and there are further wash coats needed in many places.. the base needs finishing etc, you get the idea.

concept is rats who have been "exiled" to the deserts and now prey on trade caravans, over time skin has darkened to protect from the harsh sun, fur has lightened (yellow currently, will be lighter), metals are rusted iron and copper - the rust is done the copper needs more work, the whole model will be "dusty" when finished..

thoughts?

Sounds great! It's all a bit hard to see in the picture because it's all so yellow but they look deserty anyway. :D
I realy love themed armies, and desert skaven is a very cool one to make.

Will try and take some better piccies this week, currently putting a small display board together (8" square) to sit models on for pictures.

the colour balance is horrible, partly camera, partly lighting but mostly the muppet pressing the button

Seems like a great concept, and looks like you are off to a good start! Dark skin, light fur, rust and dust, promising indeed.
The skintone looks sweet already, looking forward to pictures with claws, teeth, eyes painted, and with some highlights to deepen the contrast to show off the texture of the fur.

What eye colour are you aiming for? Yellow, orange or light green? Or have something else in mind?

Even if the warpstones are not done yet (or are they? hard to see in the picture), I'd advice you to go for a lighter version to contrast with the rusty metal and dark fur. Looks pretty good in the photo.

Whats the recipe for the bases? The packmasters base looks particularly good, the sand looks realistic from this distance, without looking booring.

Keep at it!

eyes, teeth etc will be waiting a while sadly, but will be as follows:

Eyes: gloss black
Mouth: red with a black wash (seems to work on orcs)
Teeth & claws: mid brown base, highlighted through yellow then cream, will be avoiding the white final highlight this time

warpstone will be getting more work when the basic OSL goes in, drybrushing of jade green/white mix highlighted white so it will be lighter eventually, aiming for a "washed out in the desert sun" look.

bases are seriously easy.
pre mixed filler applied to an uneven surface, painted VJ "USA Tan Earth", highlighted a "wholemeal" cream emulsion from B&Q then highlighted white. rocks are VJ "English Uniform" then drybrushed the same time as the rest of the base. edges in Tan Earth. in the pics here they are not highlighted but I have more pics to upload tonight if I get the chance.

whole model has been given a "dusty" highlight of the cream emulsion, works better than it sounds and blends them nto the base a bit more
