Any suggestions on playing against HE with only the models from the IoB set? I started off with 1000 point battles, but I realized after reading a bit that it spread my points far too thin on very few models, so I've convinced my friend to take it down to 500 point battles. What I have been doing is running my 40 clanrats in a 10x4 horde FC with a war chieftain and level 2 warlock, and throwing a warpfire on there while flanking with the two rat ogres. It has seemed to work the best out of the other things, but I often get my butt handed to me. Any suggestions to help out a noob Warhammer player? He likes to wear me down with archers and magic and then mop up with his swordmasters, sometimes opting for heavy cavalry instead. |

Take a poisoned wind mortar rather than the flamethrower, it has a longer range, can move and shoot and hide behind your units while shooting. Unfortunately luck plays a massive part in low point games and so it can be hard to plan for. Most of the games I played with IoB I didn't get to cast warp lightning at all except once, when I decimated his swordmaster unit and then destroyed his archers in combat and won. Anyway you really have to just march up at him while lobbing poisoned mortar shots at his scary combat units/ well armoured things and hope that you do some damage or he doesn't do too much damage to you. There's little else you can do tactically in such small games and with a limited number of models. Edited by ftayl5, 31st July 2012 - 07:21 AM.

I could never win the IoB games with my Skaven, the Elves really have the advantage in those small games.

500 points is reasonable but you will never win a game with 2 units of 20.

Ah thanks for the insight guys. What should I be getting to improve on my capabilities? I was thinking more clanrats and possibly a doom wheel.

A good core to any skaven army would be 2x30 clanrats 2x30 slaves and a warplightning cannon.

Get a battalion. That will give you lots of clanrats, plague monks, rat ogres and giant rats to play with/use as proxies. And then you can get a DoomWheel or a WLC/PCC and you will have a very decent army to squash those elves with. |
