It can't be killed in a single Initative phase of combat, because you can't put a wound on the Blue Packmaster when only the Orange Giant Rats are in Base-to-Base contact.
The only possible negative of these things is that this part can cause a few tantrums.

Locally tantrums are reserved for when I roll a 1-1 on the break check with the just the Packmaster remaining, and tie him into combat for a SECOND round with a single Rat Dart.

That happens so rarely, but the one time I did it did not provoke a tantrum (because I explained it clearly and efficiently to the player, who was usually quite calm about things), but there was a long period of just staring, flabbergasted, as this one guy with a whip is coolly staring down a death star of Chosen.

It's awesome.

The only thing better is a single Packmaster sending all of his pets in to die and getting chased after by some death star nonsense. It's just the silliest image ever, the entire army watching as some lone guy flees from what is essentially the entire enemy army.

Giant rat darts are amazing. I know this even though I don't use them myself,

I have to admit I know the theory behind them and have practised all the usual tactics, but I usually screw it up.

I think the biggest problem with them is M6 when everyone else is M5, so if you are advancing they hardly get out ahead of the army. My Daemons chaff is all M10 or flying, which is bloody amazing (although the cheapest costs 2.5x what a rat dart does and cant flee). Maybe we should start a petition for moulder flying rat cavalry in our next book.

That said I have missed them massively in every game I've played without them.

And on a completely unrelated note we need a rat dart emoticon.

So about the not being able to be killed in a single combat. Won't they just flee from losing combat by 6 or 7?

Yes they will, except in that 2.8% (5.4% if in BSB range) of the time when you roll a double one on the break test.

Hardly a tactic to be relied upon but funny when it does happen. Although its generally better to have the combat end in their turn, if it ends in your turn they can't overrun and get a reform just before they declare charges.

This also leads to good double baiting:

Park a rat dart right in front of a Frenzy'd unit, at about a 30 degree angle. On their turn they HAVE to charge him, which means they're now facing 30 degrees to the side, not at your main battle line. First hit wipes the rats, but not the PM. Now the PM flees, and the Frenzy'd unit MUST persue, which means now they're way out of position, and likely showing you thier flank.

You can also use the first 2 steps for non-Frenzy troops, but smart players reform.

Side thought: Has anyone ever experimented with 8&1 rat darts rather than 5&1?

As another new player thinking about how many slaves vs. clanrats I should make;

in a 1600 pts game, how many units of how many slaves and/or clanrats would you usually field?

reguardless of how many slaves and clanrats, you should have at least 160 models on the table. I'd say 2 units of 40 slaves minimum, then a unit of 30-40 clanrats. then a bunker of 25, then whatever the hell you want
