Will at some point start assembling my forces, looking for advice on how to go about this, specifically I have, or will have: 20x rats with HW&S from IoB with command 20x rats with Spear & shield from IoB and command 40x rats from the battalion set. My first thought was: assemble 20x slaves - some of the unarmoured models from IoB but less than 50% of the unit - the rest being from the battalion set - point being to assemble without shields on the majority. 2x 30 clan rats - all HW&S managed by spreading the spear armed rats about a bit so the majority in both units are HW&S and use the command models from IoB for the two units. Have also thought about going for a block of 40x slaves (again HW only on the majority) and a single unit of 37 clan rats (HW&S) - leaving the second command group out of it for now. aware 20 slaves isn't going to be amazing in the first instance plan to expand them later, but allows for 2x30 clan rat units while starting a slave unit to expand later. wonder what the general opinion is on the best way to put together a mixture of IoB and a battalion set is? if it matters only a few models are stuck together from IoB - specifically unarmoured rats aimed at being slaves, these being HW&S models, I think about 16 or so of them and a single musician aimed at a clan rat unit |

I would suggest assembling all the models you can as slaves. Units of 20 are a waste of time basically and you will pretty much need 100 of them as you look to expand. If you look over the spears there are quite a few that look decent as improvised hand weapons if you trim a bit off the blade and haft. Basically make as few models armed with spears as you can. You may be able to spot a fewHere that I have done that with. As to command. I would only make 1 champion. It's probably worth assembling 2 standards and musicians so you have the option to run them as 2 units. Although you probably won't until you are playing at 2k and above. You can use the IoB arms on the batalion bodies and vice versa if you need to with a bit of trimming. |

I was in the same situation a couple of months ago... 40 from IOB and 40 From Army Box. IIRC, you get about:
Therefore, you can't make everyone HW+shield without converting spears (Which IMO doesn't look good because you get a lot more daggers than random Hand Weapons). In addition, you can't choose which will have shields, and which will not, as all IoB has shields sculpted on the model. I opted to make:
The Clanrats may be useful in a Screaming Bell unit later, they are not able to kill anything as of yet... Slaves with shields are about as good as Slaves without, on a point to point basis, so no regrets there. I'm quite happy with the result, but plan on chipping of some shields if I buy another IoB, 40 Clanrats wiht spears+shields is sufficient anyway you look at it. |

Yeah, I went way overboard with command when I built mine. For 200 Core Rats I have 7 Standards, 8 Muscians, 4 HW/S Champs, 2 Spear Champs, 1 HW Champ. Now the campions at least can be dropped into the middle of a block, rather than the front row, and nobody really notices. Musicians and Standards are a bit more noticable, and 1:40 is sufficent for Standards. Muscians are also really important in my Meta (and with my playstyle) So I don't regret having them at 20:1. |
