Back to retirement!

Recently I ran a unit of 13 Rat Ogres with Skweel and a Bonebreaker Warlord in a 2500pt game just to try them out. They absolutely dominated the game, which is something of a new experience with me and Rat Ogres! It was against High Elves, and they destroyed 8 Dragon Princes, 20 odd Phoenix Guard with BSB, and a bunch of Seaguard, which led to them fleeing and taking a Prince with them. I am so used to Rat Ogres not doing their job, and even when they do alright they rarely win me games so comprehensively. I was grinning so much after that. I finally have a Rat Ogre success story after 8 years of playing Skaven! - Sammy |

Lol, well high elves had it comming... I think there are a good few units in the game that are rubbish in small numbers and so rare in large numbers people seldom see them, sort of like Giants, one is rubbish but two working together are a lot better. big brick of rat ogres is going to take some chewing through and is evil to face to boot... |

I've used them just to make my army big enough for the game I was playing, I've accumulated 14 of them over time (though only really wanting the Giant Rats they come with). I've found, and Sammy the Squid's post corroborates this, that they do tend to work well in larger units. If you've got scary things an Abomb, Doomwheel and a few large units as well, then the Rogres aren't likely to suffer much enemy fire. Adding Skweel is very wise and the regeneration makes the unit amazing, the other 2 outcomes are beneficial too but not as dramatically. I used a unit of 12 and it did very well in all 4 games I played with the list, took few casualties to shooting (and I didn't even have an Abomb) and really chewed up some Saurus Cav and a Stegadon, and later went after a large Saurus unit. In another game they basically did all the non-shooting damage my army caused. But outside of rather large units like that, I do not take them. Less than 6 is too few IMO. Never tried 6-8, I could see it being okay. The issue is being T4 with no save, they're so very easily devastated by light shooting, magic missiles and strong breezes. With just 6 they start to lose fighting potential immediately as the take casualties. With a unit like 12 they can take a lot more damage before losing any attacks. But that's just me, generally I can't find the points for them because anything they can do, another unit can do better, or just as well but for fewer points. |

Just played a tournament using 2 units of 2 and 1 unit of 5. Overall they impressed me, though almost nobody shot at them the whole time. I would take the units of 2 again if I had 200 spare points in my list and already had enough slaves. i think one unit of 2 isn't great, but the 2 of them working together posed a significant threat from a small frontage. Just be aware if using them on the flanks against chaff as I did you will find yourself forced to charge a lot. |

I feel lie most armies would rather face rat ogres than some the other strong skaven units. The unit can be worth a crap ton of points and is easy to shoot or magic to death. |

Just used 1 master bred and 1 norm with master moulder + things catcher and they killed a giant and then proceeded to flank a group of gors and broke them and chased them down in a 1000 point army. I like to use them in a small list as flank protectors for my bunker unit and if im happy my bunker is safe they run down the flank to help the slaves or cause mischief amongst casters, i also like to keep them in cover if i can . I also run a abom in this list so they dont take much heat. |

I have used a unit of 6 with Champion combined with rat darts to help control the Rat Ogres Frenzy. They have gone well vs. certain armies eg: Ogres, TK's, Orcs & Gobbos. Not good vs. High Elves avoid Sword Masters & White Lions. |

I always use a unit of 6, with 3, packmasters. And they always seem to fluff all of their attacks... But I still love Rat Ogres, and 21 S5 I4 attacks is (at least in theory) quite painful against most infantry. Not to mention the extra stomp attacks one gets! //Svarten |

I really want to use them again (haven't consistently since 5th), I need to get a few more painted up and I'll experiment with bigger units ~6 instead of the 2 or 3 small packs I've run that proved useless. --Cap Edited by CapAmr05, 15th July 2012 - 03:05 AM.
