OK as usual sooner or later my mind wonders back to Rat ogres and how much they suck when they shouldn't.

So is anyone using them anymore?

ive used two rat ogres agais high elves a few times... just to run down the flank and hit soft targets like bolt throwers or fast calvary. They do ok, more to distract or scare and for 80 points it aint that bad (yeah i know, you could use a rat dart for this but in a less competitive environment its ok.

I've started to use them in pack of 6, with squeek and the rattogre champion. A bit random with the power-up, but I've discovered that they're quite powerful.

I never do, but I got owned by a unit of 7 the other day so I have reconsidered.
Of course if I'd taken a rat dart or 2 they would have been no problem. They do look good in some situations. I can just never justify the points.

How is this off topic by the way?

If I will use them in even the near future it will be a very big unit. I have actually found that if you don't get Regen, Skweel isn't worth it at all, but with a big horde of them it will probably be closer to worth it.

i've found that the additional attack is very often worth it.

i've found that the additional attack is very often worth it.
3 attacks for + what Skweel does himself for 108 points doesn't seem worth it. If you use it on a horde, I think it can be well worth it, but not really on 6 of them deployed 3 wide. It only results in about 1 more kill from the Rat Ogres that way, while Skweel does something himself (I don't bother to math this down). I think that Skweel is very good, but I would not refrain from using Rat Ogres just because I didn't have the points for him. I don't he fixes their issues at all or helps them become much better, partly because the rules for the unit becomes ridiculous. My friend always plays with this unit, and we come into the same argument on how we should play it every time.

It is such a pain to play against or with just for that.

Also, we're still kinda needing rules on how to rank and horde them.

How does 1 RO compare, combat wise, to 4 Plague Monks? I know we're going to be loosing attacks, but are we gaining anything?

Stength 5 attacks are otherwise hard to come by in a combat-unit for Skaven, unless you've got censer bearers as well. I'd use the Rat Ogres as can-openers on slow but medium-to-well-armoured foes, 4 wide and 2 deep, netting you 28 str. 5 attacks, plus stomps if no ROgres have been killed, and at a respectable initiative of 4. Of course, you need to correct with the proper target and not get shot to bits, but it's a damage-output that's otherwise hard to match.

I used them once and they did very well. Although I think it was because the person I was playing against did not understand how tough they were in close combat and payed no attention to them until they hit the flank of his big cavalry unit.

To reply to what some of you have said it is not there offense that is in doubt but there ability to take damage, or lack of it. I do not have my book handy but 4 or 5 toughness, no armor save, and like 2 wounds is not going to keep them around if they are focused on.

I love the idea of Skweel but the random power up is lame. Although I did use him with my Rat Ogres and will again in friendly games. I also believe having Skweel in the unit is the only way to make them semi ok.

in 3k games i use a unit of 12 plus skweel on flank with hp .this combo tends to roll up a flank while the wcannon and mortars tear shreds out of the centre

They've got three wounds each, but it's true that they can't take much of a beating, with only toughness 4 and no armour.

I use a lot of Rat Ogres as unit fillers in my 2,500 point army - I can knock up a decent Rat Ogre in half an hour, whilst the same 4 Clan Rats would take me longer. I also like the way it makes the unit look - although admittedly I'm only a friendly player, and in my 40 strong units of Clan Rats I only use 1 or 2 Rat Ogres per unit in order to prevent confusion.

I've not played for a while though, and I've got a game coming up this weekend...... and I'm tempted to completely mix my army list up, and not rely on my old lists and start taking units like my Screaming Bell and more Rat Ogres just to mix it up a bit!

I am considering taking some to my next tournament.

Has anyone considered using them in units of 2 with 2 packmasters?
I plan to use them only 1 wide 2 deep formation.
With 7 S5 and 2 S3 attacks form a 40mm frontage I see them as a good way to clean out chaff or add some combat prowess if charge into a combat with slaves.
Also at only 92 points it doesn't matter that much if the enemy targets them as it means your main combat units will be making it in untouched.
