Yep, so it would be entirely possible to zap one unit and make it flee, causing the lightning to jump to a closer unit possibly making that flee and then possibly another. Dev
But since these are casualty panic tests, not break tests, making Unit A flee won't provoke a check on unit B unless A passes through B. Still, 3 running units would be AWESOME. Still, setting up 3 units to be 1 unit from 25% or more is a tough one.

Hmm, my friend swore blind (going over the army book no less!) that the shots didn't hit automatically and that you had to roll to hit...

In the game we played, that actually saved more of my troops than his, ironically enough, but I'm definitely correcting that the next time we play...

Quickly, please, before they are out of range." - Vaarsuvius, Order of the Stick.

Lord Skreee! knows the answer, of course - raining arcane destruction is ALWAYS an appropriate response! To anything at all, in fact.

Q. Must a Doomwheel roll to hit with each "Zzzzap!" bolt? Can
it stand and shoot? (p66)
A. No to both questions.

It's in the FAQ so thats why he must have missed it

Ok, one further clarification then.. it''ll distribute those hits into a unit of say 20 (conferring say, the 4 rolled on the D6 to wound) - therefor rolling to wound for four wounds in the unit.

99% chance it's a stupid question, but it'd be good to lay it to rest..

Nope. The three lightning bolts each have the Multiple Wounds (D6) rule which only comes into play against multi-wound models like ogres or monsters. So at most you can kill three models with the Doomwheel's lightning per turn.

Don't worry, it's a very common misunderstanding :)

Multi-wound vs. Multiple Wounds is one of the toughest rules to grasp in my opinion, especially when you're dealing with single vs. multi wound models.

It gets harder in 40K where you need to worry about unique models within a unit as well.

In brief (as Matik stated) You hit 3 Models. Each model is hit with Artillery die Strength, and each Model takes d6 wounds. If this is enough to kill the Model, additional wounds are lost. Against a Mixed unit without randomization rules (ie. Grey Seer, BSB, and Engineer in a Clanrat Bunker) the Model will be a Rank and File model (ie a Clanrat) if there are 5 or more Models in the Unit. Against a mixed unit with Randomization rules (ie. a Rat Dart) use these rules for determining the Model (ie. 1-4 Giant Rat, 5-6 PackMaster) who is hit.

Finally remember each hit is resolved completely before moving on to the next one. If the Model you just killed takes the unit below 25%, you make the Panic Test immediately. This may change the target for the next bolt. For this reason I always advise firing the Doom Wheel last if you have multiple enemies within 18 inches.
