Starting Clan Skryre

Hi everybody!

So I've decided to go for Skaven for my next army (after some heavy deliberation about whether to go Dark Elves or not) and in particular I want to do a purely Clan Skryre list. To that end, I've got a few questions...

1) How are the Skaven from the Island of Blood set put together? Is it really simplistic like 2-3 pieces of model just sticking on arms and stuff or do they come on sprues like regular plastics?

2) Are there any cheaper alternatives to Globadiers that don't involve heavy amounts of conversions? I've done a fair bit of lurking so far and I've already decided to use plaguemonk+kroot guns as Jezzails but I haven't found anything for Globadiers that isn't just sticking a ton of bitz together and hoping for the best.

3) Anybody got any good ways to differentiate slaves from clanrats, beside paintscheme? Also on that note, I've got a ton of old style one-piece skinks sitting around, think they could be used as slaves?

4) I'm intending to buy a bunch of stuff in a few weeks time and just wanted to get some comments on it I guess, the list of what I intend to buy is below.

  • 5x Island of Blood (Skaven-side only, from eBay) - I was tempted to go with 2-3x and get a couple batallion boxes but I'll never use all the plague monks or the rat ogres/rats, due to going strictly Skryre.
  • 10x Kroot Guns (for Jezzails)
  • Box of Plague Monks (see above)
  • 2x Ratling Guns (I know they're not great, but with the IoB it'll give me some diversity in my weapons teams)
  • 2x Warp Lightning Cannons
  • Ikit Claw
  • Doom Wheel

Comes out to roughly £230, assuming about £27 for a Skaven-only IoB kit from eBay and buying from GiftsForGeeks. This will give me the following:

1 Ikit
5 Warlocks
5 Warlords
190 Clanrats
10 Jezzails
10 Plague Monks
5 Warpfire
5 Plague Wind Mortars
2 Ratlings
2 Warp Lightning Cannons
Doom Wheel
10 Rat Ogres

1) - Most are usually 2-3 pieces that slot-in to one another. The IoB Clanrats differ from the boxed set Clanrats in that you don't get the ball-joint arm sockets (or arms), so posing is limited with them. However, the shields are molded onto the models, so that saves you some time. Overall, I prefer the boxed set Clanrats over IoB Clanrats, but cost-effectiveness is a major draw-card here.

2) - No. There are supposedly new ones coming, though not sure if they are new-new or just Finecast versions of the old ones.

3) - Most of the current Clanrats from either set come in various forms of body armour; some metallic, others leather or cloth. I tend to use the former as my Clanrats, particularly the ones with spikes built in to distinguish them from the scum.

4) - Honestly, buy to field what you like. Nobody's opinion on this topic is any better than your own, so long as you do your best to save money. For example, many, many people have been trying to sell me on the Hell-Pit Abomination since I returned to the game and I've told them all to go jump. I simply do not like it.

The Island of Blood can work very well. The sockets mean you can easily assemble them and if you want to make different poses then you can easily cut the pins and position the arms another way. The only issue with the island of blood set is that the two units of clan rats come only enough weapons that you are limited in making only two units of 20 with full command, one with spears and another with handweapons.

As for slaves and Clanrats I am currently keeping the ones with armour as Clanrats while the ones without armour and scars to be slaves. The simplest way of making them different is using different colour schemes and adding a wash of brown to make those pitiful slaves more dirty. My Clanrats have cream with red hoods while my slaves have just dirty cream all over.
