Plague Furnace; Horde formation

Greetings!

On page 49 it is sayd that: "Count the Plague Furnace as the same number of Plague Monks that would normally occupy that space (typically 15)".

If I would want to field a benifit from the "horde" formation rule when fielding my Plague Monks and the Plague Furnace, how many Monks would have to flank the Plague Furnace on each side?

As written it could be argued one only needs 7 (7 Monks + bace of the Plague Furnace 3 = 10)?

Yup as far as I know you need 7 monks.

Victories and Losses (7)
Wizards (4)
Morale/psychology (2)
Characters (2)
Infantry (2)
Monsters/Monstrous infantry (1)
Warmachines (2)
Painting/hobby (6)

Yes, 7 monks + the furnace's width can get you horde formation. Also remember that the Furnace (and Bell) must always be put in the unit as centrally as possible, so a monk unit will have 4 files on one side of the furnace and 3 files on the other side of the furnace.

The one and only.
That drives me crazy because 4 on one side and 3 on other other is not right and it looks weird and ARGH!! :KA-BOOM:

I should get some more monks and just go 11 wide.

11 wide is the way :-).... How can you even field 3 on one side and 4 on the other :-)

Another question about this. Can a GS on a Bell "make way" ? so moving to the combat?

I actually recommend trying the Plague Furnace unit with a minimum frontage (a monk on each side). A unit of 25 monks and furnace will have a frontage of 5 and a depth of 8. This allows maximum damage potential on a small frontage and maximum ranks in order to break units (hordes especially) by negating steadfast. Pretty sweet.

Except that in any given combat you're doing almost as much damage to yourself as the enemy, and flank attacks are extra deadly because you've got more flank.

Pardon me asking, but how are you damaging yourself just as much?

Fumes will make you test on 13 units of your own vs 3 of the enemy.

Actually I think it's just d6 Fume hits per touching Unit (no book today) rather than every adjacent Model, unless you have a Plague Censor on the Priest.

it's only D6 and you should most likely never take a censer for a priest on a furnace.

I guess I could see not running a horde with the furnace against some armies. Sometimes those extra attacks don't do much and the size of the unit can be a disadvantage.

Sneaking into this thread to ask a question of my own :)

The plague furnace is on a 60mm x 100mm base, which makes it line up pretty crappy
to chariot bases. I assume only monks on one side of the furnace will be able to fight
when lined up with a 50mm base?
