Hey!

So I am thinking about getting into Skaven as my 2nd WHFB army... Im curently fielding a Dwarf Gunline list and am looking into a race that has a bit more character with regards to how it is fielded...

I am in the midst of converting a 40k player to WHFB and we are thinking of splitting an IoB box set to get him set up quickly with HE...

a few Q's I have about the skaven though...

1. These slave tar pits I keep seeing in lists.... at 50 models that is a TON of money for 1 unit.... Im in Canada and they are $18 for 5!
Are there any tricks or tips for getting a unit of these guys on the cheap?

2. Are there any absolute JUNK units to avoid... I am the kind of player who would MOSTLY be playing for the fun of it but I am not a fan of blowing $60 on a model that will always get rocked.

3. What are the better CORE unit set ups?

I understand that the Skaven are a financial and time consuming army to paint, and im ok with that. I would just like to be pointed in the right direction so as to avoid re buying units etc do the related costs already.

Cheers,

Welcome.

Best place to start is to check out Mathusala0's competitive building guide. It'll give you the best idea for what works best together. I don't say good or bad because they're all useful, you just need to know how to use them.

A Guide to Competitive List Building

For slave tarpits there are a couple of methods that don't involve $500 of metal. The most common is splitting the IoB/ClanRat boxes into "armored and unarmored" then painting them a bit different. Another one that's seen some popularity of late is literal slave units: taking a group of models from another army, and pressing them into service. Current favorites for this are night goblins, gnoblars, Flagellants, and Manic Zombies, though those last may present problems at tourney level.

I labelled what I consider clannies in green and slaves in red. What do you think?

Forward, you Gobbo scum!; ...my first alternative Skavenslaves.
Mantic Ghouls As Slaves; Using Mantic ghouls as slave proxies
Flagellants, Night Goblins, and Gnoblars as slaves

Your best bet for what and how to field though is to read the Army List forum. There's a few thousand pages there of people debating the relative merit of various units, and samples of what we run.

So before Kimzi finds you: would you like a cookie? Dev

Man this is really becoming a thing now. Lucky for the newer members im here.

for slaves using GW's slave models is a good way to end up homeless and out of money in my view. Most people just use clanrats as slaves (with or without shields, although the iob ones come attached with shields) you can get these very cheap off ebay which I recommend. For other stuff I would say use online retailers. I am in the,UK and use total wargamer which has something like a 22% discount.

As for what to avoid. Plague censor bearers and night runners. Rat ogres are also a subpar choice however I use mine as unit filers.

Now would you like a scone. I made it myself. Hehehhehe

The one and only.
Don't eat anything these people give you. Unless you like waking up in a small cage with your head missing and various tubes going into your body that is.

Welcome to the site, and to Skaven. I see everyone already answered your questions so I don't have to pretend I know anything.
Looking forward to seeing pictured of your army once you start painting.

A cheaper option for slaves would be units of gnoblars, or converting them from other races

2. Are there any absolute JUNK units to avoid... I am the kind of player who would MOSTLY be playing for the fun of it but I am not a fan of blowing $60 on a model that will always get rocked.
rat ogres, censers, jezzails and nightrunners are generally seen as the weaker units

3. What are the better CORE unit set ups?
Slaves to tarpit, clanrats to bunker of bring weapon teams and stormvermin for hammering. Giant rats are a good option asweel but they don't count towards the minimum of core.
