1. I feel like 2400 is the most competitive to be honest. 2. 20-25 based on round length. 3. 1.5-2 hours per round 4. Probably between 6 and 8 hours. 8 if you go 2400, 5-6 if you stick with 1k. So that's about 132$-164$ for the room, and you can get as much as 500 dollars if 20 people show up and you make the cost 25$. I would advise having the prize breakdown be about 50%-60% of the remaining money, with something like a 100/60/40 for 1st/2nd/3rd. With twenty people this would make around 140$ leftover which you could then use as prizes for say a painting competition afterwards or random prizes like "Best General" "Best Sportsmanship" and throw in a few funny ones like "Worst Dice Rolls". If you have these extra competitions it encourages more of the hobby oriented players to come out, but also justifies the 25$ entrance fee. You could even drop the entrance fee to 15$ if you have prize support, but if not I would not go below 20$. Hope this helps |

This. The biggest reason i stopped playing 40k (and dont play fantasy) at my local club is its all tournoments, all like $5/10 entry fee and I never seemed to win any games (the tau in 5th arnt exactly the most competitive army). So it felt like I was paying money just to play the game. A set number of games is IMHO better than a bracket because then people keep playing the whole time instead of loosing and having to watch other people's games for a bit. And the ones I have been to were usually around 8 people and it would take us around 2/3 hours per game (40k 5th ed). |

1. It's one of the more common points, it would kinda depend on the people you expect to attend. 2. I'd go lower 15 but it depends on the quality of terrain and stuff and amount of prizes. We charge €10 for our 5 round 2 day tournament but that's a conscious choice as we don't give cash prizes and focus on socializing rather than competition. Also we have low overhead. Well had. Basically enough to cover rent, and prizes. Most people accept at. 3. That sounds optimistic to me @ 2,4k. 2,5h-3h / round is what I observe in real life at our tournaments. Problem is people drag deployment out something fierce in an effort to be so damned clever. That and getting all friendly and stuff. This is our 2day/2,4k tournament schedule:schedule! It's slightly special because we need to take a boat schedule into mind. So you can't arrive and leave at any time. Depends a bit on the players, if all are locals then it might go a bit faster, but I strongly recommend policing deployment. Tell people they should only use 30 minutes. Get a whistle. When 30 minutes have gone blow, hard. Then tell anyone not playing to hurry the eff up or you get the cat o nine tails. We've palyed 4 games one day once. It was waaay too much. 3 games a day is what people can take mostly. |

thanks for the post i do like many of the ideas like worst dice roller not sure how you could keep good count of that but i will bring it up at the meetings you can be sure i do thing MIHO is how we are going with 3or 4 rounds it looking like a $15 fee with a discount for group members of like $3 so if your a member it only 12 and people can pay for a membership at the door for $10 for a 6 months but $20 would allow for more prizes but may put people off i know in magic the gathering $20 was viewed as high we will put a time on set up 30 mins seems far and were looking at 8-10 hours are set up and clean up is in there as well once again thank you for you post if you have any more ideals plz post them |

$20 is high for magic, but Magic starts at $11, for a deck, not $90 for a boxed set. When I look at Tourney's I'm seeing between $25 and $50, depending on prize level, location, and other factors. When we run in house Tourney's at the FLGS (where we don't need to pay for space, just prize support) it's $10 for 'games' $15 for 'fund raisers'. (Fund raisers are 50% the buy-in for prize support, 50% to buy terrain for the FLGS) A lot of the ones I see are no entry fee for the tourney, but they're at an event where there's a $30 per day/$60 weekend door fee. Again the event helps with prize support. For duration, Most single day events I see are 3 rounds, typically swiss, occasionally with a 'Finals' Round after that. IF you're paying by the hour though, I'd just do the 3 rounds. Games are 2.5-4 hours, but if you're paying by the hour, I'd go 2.5. with Breaks this gives you the following schedule: 9-10am - Check in 10-12:30 - Game 1 12:30-1:30 - Lunch (and Paint Judgeing, if you're doing that) 1:30 - 4 - Game 2 4:30- 7 - Game 3 7:15 - 7:30 Awards With 1 hour for setup and breakdown, that's 12.5 hours total. |

Some times, and some areas, will push the Start back so you get reg from 8:30 -9, then you move lunch to between games 2 and 3 (3-4 rather than 12:30 to 1) or try to include two 1 hour breaks. Either way be sure you leave enough time in your schedule for your Operations Team to setup the tables and terrain before registration starts. |

If you have a laptop at your disposal, make sure you prep your scoring sheet (I used excel) and test it with fake scores beforehand. Also have a method for keeping track of previous matchups (and tables if the terrain varies greatly); no one wants to play the same person twice and some players don't want to be on the same table twice either. If you end up double matching someone in later rounds you can run into a knot that can eat up precious setup time while you figure out alternate opponents. --Cap Edited by CapAmr05, 6th March 2012 - 06:06 AM.

To avoid this I strongly recommend a pairings program. I use an originally free German one. Takes a *bit* of getting used to but it has served us well. Admittedly with a small faux-pas last year when I was suppose to start the tournament I managed to define an impossible pairing somehow and the whole thing collapsed on me. URL: http://www.tabletoptournaments.net/t3_goepp.php If you keep it simple you can ignore most of the complicate stuff. |
