Another favorite is him again on that store where they told off his kid for using non-GW glue in-store. By all means have rules that drive away customers, save a penny lose a dollar type of thing. But talk to the parent and explain the situation, we have corporate rules which I must follow, would you please consider that in the future etc etc. And don't go hassle the 9 year old about not having the right kind of glue.
That's it ... if that's how it's going to be i'm moving on to Mantic stuff ... and buying fake recasts on Chinese ebay ...

Please don't promote illegal activity. Silas

I wouldn't want to be part of that. This is at best second hand information (although the guy it happened to did complained to GW HQ and steps were being taken, or so he was told, although I can't recall if it was this, the silly campaign or both he wrote them about), and while this is probably not an isolated incidence it's not exactly company wide either. Some stores understand that being customer friendly sells better, others chase every sale.
This seems to be one of the worse examples. I've seen lots more people praise their local GW stores.

With a lot of inexperienced staff being indoctrinated the GW way you end up with these wise-asses who try to be "holier than the pope".

Since I am not generally happy with GW's shenanigans, not these but many others, if I buy GW stuff I do so through discount retailers and second hand. Now I don't have a real GW store anywhere nearby anyway, but if I did. I'd be there telling them I was unhappy and that I'm taking my business elsewhere. I actually did that last time I was in a real GW store.

Your mention of Mantic jogged my memory of this positive incident. When I went in to the cool GW and asked the manager if I could use a few mantic models in store he said it would be "frowned upon" but no more than that. I never had any intention of playing in store with my Mantic models I was just testing the boundaries but has anyone else been given a virtual green light to use non-GW models in in-store games? I thought they could get into hot water for that.

To Silas: I live in CHina:

I'll stop talking about it from now on ... but you should know I couldnt afford GW on my salary, and if I went out of my way to find the real stuff here at the proper price then i'd be buying the same fake but at 3 times the price.

so you want me to quit my hobby instead?

cheers ^ ^

Im rather lucky, recently moved and have actually befriended the GW staff, they are (i was shocked to find) actually nice people, not with the pushiness of my previous store. I actually have had a few games in store with them, something that had never happened before! Its just good to remember that with every horrid little warlord running a store there is someone out there with a genuine love of the hobby doing the same job but much better!

Too true. As much as I scorn those who deserve it some managers and staffers are a pleasure to talk to.

I live in Southern California, so theres like oh 5 stores each within a 30 minute drive including the L.A. battle bunker. I'll give the Battle Bunker its props, its a huge store with like 20 gaming tables, plus they like divide the store into a gaming room and the actual store. Haha the guys in the gaming area are really nice, but I often got hassled by the guys in the store. For example, back in the Nemesis Crown Campaign I went for a 1000 point battle and they suddenly changed the battle to 2000 point an hour before the game. I then of course told the manager I couldnt play because of a lack of models, he then proceeded to get me a 1000 points from their show case models, random customers in the store and did everything possible so I could play! (Yay him) Then when I left the guys in the store area legitimately asked if I wanted to buy all those models in box form... lol

I've never had a really bad experience with my local GW store. The only time anyone got remotely pushy was when Storm of Magic released and that was from a couple of new hires. Even then, it was obvious they were just exercising the techniques they had been taught and once I stated that I wasn't interested they stopped the sales pitch. Usually, the store staff is eager to chat and talk strategy/tactics or painting techniques such that I sometimes feel guilty for not buying anything. As a result, I buy my paints, primer, replacement brushes and such almost exclusively from them and I'll pick up the occasional model box as needed. With the current state of my collection and interest I don't buy much in any case.

The one and only.
My 'local' Gw in Den Haag is nice enough. The staff are friendly and they always try to invite me to their events. Problem is it's a 30 min bus ride to get there and I'm poor. I usually just order my stuff on-line because it's cheaper (discount and no bus needed), but I try to visit the GW every now and then when I need like one paint.

I have been in quite a few different GW's and I kinda liked them all. The people try to sell you stuff, but that's their job. They never were too pushy with me, even when I looked like a total noob.
Well except that one time I just came from a Gothic and Fantasy event dressed in a net shirt and leathers. But every shop I walked in gave me that same response then anyway.

The new GW store where I live happens to be in a location where people have money. Honestly I have yet to be assaulted with sales pitches or pushing for product to be purchased. I think because of the location all they honestly have to do is be nice and helpful with questions and the sales just come.

When you walk in of course the entire staff notices your presence and asks if you need or want anything but after the initial greeting they let you be. The other cool thing is that they have recomended other game stores for product that they do not carry which must be damning if the higher ups ever found out about their suggestions. Honestly it's refreshing to see them acknowledge the other area gamestores that also carry their product.

So I honestly cannot speak ill of my local GW. The prices are horrid and the store is smaller than my local game shop that I frequent but the staff is nice, the store is always busy and the boards are always full so they must be doing something right.

After reading all of the horrible things about GW employee's, I can think of a lot of instances where the employees have been terrible, but at the Chicago B.B. I have made friends with most of the (current) guys there. They are the most chill group of guys I have met. You walk and your new, they ask if you play, what you play, and if you wanna try a game. If they know you, "Sup dude" then back to whatever they were doing. They mostly game with guys, paint, or give tips. The manager, TIm is the best (he has 25 golden demons).

Regarding the selling of excessive models to kids parents:

the GW store i used to go to (the nice one) was inside a large westfield shopping centre. Mothers(rich familys) would come and drop of their children from anywhere from 2-6 hours, and at times i saw GW staff separating kids because they could not get along. So they basically became glorified babysitters who were babysitting rich free loaders...
Then after the six hours, a mother would come to pick up her child and be conned into buying a $400-800 space marine batlle box or whatever (the one where you got more than you could possibly ever field against your friends). This i think, is fair game....

@Scratch. If they are doing that then fair enough. In England I think the law would frown upon (if not punish) a mother who left a dependant child in a shop with strangers whilst she went off on her own.
The mothers I see getting hassled are with their kids when they enter and leave the strore and they always look like they are completely bullied and bemused. I really feel sorry for them. I feel like going over and saying "You don't need any of this crap, ignore the sales pitch". It puts me off going in so god knows how the mothers feel.
