too small for the wolves? i feel like i've seen fantastic artwork where the wolves are much bigger in comparison to the goblin then in the current model range. also i've always imagined a wolf rider to be holding on for dear life rather then actually leading the wolf all that much no? dont have my old O&G army book so cant find the artwork, might have been john blanche stuff |

Because you are new to the game. (*) In Rogue Trader marines would indeed use camouflage. The reason they do not now, is because they've upped the "awesome sauce factor to 9000" or some BS like that. The in-game explanation is now quite simply that they choose not to. The fear and awe Space Marine brings is more important than hiding. Makes perfect sense in-game. (*) I didn't play back then either, I'm just well read |

Well, there is one chapter that used a form of camo, called the Mantis warriors I believe - but it was designed for a space age world with all sorts of bright yellows and greens and such . . . it didn't really pay off, I think they took a hammering during the Badab wars. Nice to see we are getting around to my grip with 40k now. What is my main issue with how the models look? Glad you asked What is the point in wearing terminator armour and then not wearing your helmet because your the serg? Doesn't make you more indestructible. And I know a guy who a entire marine army all wearing no helmets. Really narks me. It's like the year is 40k there is only war and no one can aim at the head because that would make you dead! | |

You cant blame the kids (and even the silly adults that we are) for liking the look of a miniature and buying it. I'm on your side about the 40k universe, because if giant mutated organized rats existed that's what they would do! And if ubber super warriors wearring mega ultra armor could exist they'd send planes and finish you off with drones ... or if there is nothing valuable to retreive they'd destroy your planet from the spaceship ...

Now that would be a more realistic version of 40K. Turn 1, roll a D6. The player with the highest score destroys the planet from orbit and wins the game. Saves a bit of time. |

And wastes planets. Only so many planets are inhabitable by humans, 40k tech or no. As such every planet is extremely valuable, this is asserted in the background. There's a lovely bit in one of the GG novels I think where the option si to retake a planet on the ground or bomb it. The buildings are too valuable so they send in millions of guardsmen instead. Less damage that way. IIRC it was a Forgeworld. This is why Exterminatus often isn't an option. Same deal as a Nuclear war here on earth would be. No winners. Which of course is why when Kryptmann ordered entire sectors evacuated and destroyed to halt a Tyranid invasion is shows how deep the peril is. DUN-DUNH-DUUNNNN I don't expect people to have to like 40k. The problem is you are using external logic on it. That you can't solve every problem with an orbital strike is why I give a damn about 40k. Same deal with historical wargaming, by the time people started shooting at guys they can't see I totally lose interest. Oh, and the helmet thing. Who said the model is always not wearing a helmet? Maybe he has just removed it because a hit has destroyed most of the optics in it leaving him otherwise blind. Sure you are more exposed, but that's better than not seeing the enemy at all. Oh yeah ironically Space Wolfs have a keen sense of smell and sight which is dulled by wearing a helmet. The models aren't exact representations of reality, they are at best a snapshot in time to give a visual clue. Besides noone forces you to not model helmets on leaders. Don't diss the game for the players choice. I don't say 40k is stupid because some people insist on modeling female Space Marines. And there are plenty of situations in the real world where someone should have been wearing their helmet but did not. Don't ask me where my bicycle helmet is.... One of the few things I just can't reconcile, ironically is Thunderwolf cavalry. How exactly they get from "We kill Fenrisian wolves(*) to prove how awesome we are to get into the club" and "weeee, puppies" escapes me. (if there actually were any wolfs on Fenris, which there aren't) |

Dude. It was a completely sarcastic comment. I wasn't really advocating a wargame in which the winner is decided by the roll of a single dice.

LOL unless they are 007 type bad guys *grins* it's always hard to explain why a goblin on a wolf is a more immersive story then a space marine on a wolf (for some of us) For me I think it's because most good sci-fi books dont have any kind of pitched battles in them but are more concerned problematics of ressources, ethics, and technology. On the other hand fantasy almost always involves some kind of battle, even though it isnt always on the same scale and isnt always good vs evil (mostly it is, but not always) Now in a sci-fi post apocaliptic planet on the other hand ... it's a different story ^^ |

To go on the point of sending in the drones and that instead of waves of Guardsmen, Nids, or surgical Marine strikes, the funny thing with 40K is that while it is so futuristic it is also very backwards. Any of you that know a little on tanks probably know that the great many of 40K tanks (at least on the Imperium side) are very flawed (In fact in certain ways the tanks of today are superior!) Other alien races use other means or also just do not have that level of technology available. But most of anything I enjoy the dark themes behind that Universe which can be just as rich as our own here. But anyway this talk of using the wolves for Goblins is really starting to tempt me. ![]() And WillQueek, awesomest army eh? Blood for the Blood God!!! |

Ah yes I remeber old Planet Killer and the two Blackstone Fortresses. Pity no one ever seems to play the game. And don't forget that the Orks love to drive huge chunks of space rock straight into planets! |
