I'll be the first to admit I know next to nothing about 40k rules. I'll also be the first to admit that I think space marines riding giant robo-dogs are beyond silly (as are space marines in general). I am eternally bemused at the fervour space marines inspire in people. Every Space marine army, from grey knights to blood angels looks identical apart from the paint job. OHhhhh.. But this one has a sword on a stick and this one has a slightly different helmet and these guys have flames on their armour. Oh and dey iz superhumanzez!!!!
Yawn.....Badass? I think not. Repetetive and predictable? Oh yes.

Well when you look at it we are all currently discussing and arguing about little plastic/resin/metal models and trying to perceive them as having their own little world and their own little identity. A fair number of us are also classed as adults. The point is all of these wargames are silly and can easily make us very silly. Just go with the flow.

But back on topic, I hadn't actually realised it was a second wave new release. *slaps head*

@snowblizz. I couldn't agree more. There are a few differences though. At the very least the mutated rats only belong to one army and are not spread into a multitutde of supposed *seperate* armies each with their own codex. Of these* totally seperate* armies, each one wears the same armour, utilises the same standard vehicles and weapons, has access to planet destroying weaponary and teleportation devices yet make a concious decision to fight with swords, axes and shields and to ride around on archaic forms of transport (be it bike, wolf or tank) and only visually differentiate from every other space marine army in how they are painted. I'm falling asleep even talking about the heroes of humanity.

I go with the flow. But I also wonder at why some people go more with one flow than others.

Didn't GW release the last Nid codex not too long after the one before and even sooner after an influx of new models? :P
And what with this revolutionary new rulebook that's meant to be coming out sometime soon, the Nids will likely be one of the first updated books if they go down that path!

Well if Space Marines are like 100 Awesomes, and Thunderwolves are also 100 Awesomes, then Space Marines roming around on Thunderwolves have gotta be like 200 Awesomes right?! Emperor's Teeth, this is loads of Awesome!!! *Throws money at Games Workshop.*
I think this is what we're supposed to be thinking right now...

Although I'm aware I risk the wrath of WillQueek whenever he gets back from holidays I have to say they're a bit dumb and thoroughly tasteless. 40k has an extremely rich background in my opinion, which is more than capable of supporting extremely serious themes of horror, sanity, justice and moral ambiguity. Dark Heresy, Inquisitor and Necromunda as well of the medium of novels proves this beyond a doubt. I even think Space Marines certainly have their place in this setting. When you get past all the ubiquitous shooting to bits of bad guys these indoctrinated superhumans can make for properly interesting characters. This is all why I love the background of 40k.

But yeah, loonies in blue armour riding big wolves around...? ^o) I really think GW have shot themselves in the foot with their own bolt pistol.

Yes. yes and yes. 40K background is excellent. I love the Gaunt's ghosts novels in particular and the dark, brooding feel of the universe as a whole but this constant need to update space marines every other day is annoying as hell.
There is so much more to the fluff than big men in different coloured armour shooting blocky guns at people yet GW don't realise this. Space marines, in general, are cool. Ten different chapters with an ever increasing amount of ludicrous troops isn't. And don't get me started on the scale creep....Dreadknights anyone? Pffff.....

Me too. But mainly because my Chaos Space Marines so seldom get to benefit from the 'rule of "cool"'.
Yeah, I'm with you there snowblizz - we can get cool plague marines that have FNP and blight grenades yet the 'superior' chaos lord only gets the T5 :'( lets hope the new 'dex is much more fun and has alot more to do with the fluff, rumours say it'll be the first 6th ed. codex :D

I can't help but feel GW really missed the boat with this wave of releases - anyone who wanted these modles would have bought them/converted them ages ago now, plus the Mr Dandy wolves looked alot beefier and at least semi-plausible as mounts for the space vikings.

mutate:
[rant] Just for the record, incase I didn't make it clear, space wolves suck!!! and space wolves killing my precious thousand sons suck even more . . . now there's only 999 sons left
On a serious note, their fluff is really quite cheesy and completely out of character with the 40k lore in my opinion, much like the blood angels - sometimes giving a legion 'character' can go a little too far, and thats when you get space vampires. Dark Angels are a true Legion With Character, wolves are a just a little overblown and unbelievable - in galaxy full of gods and interstellar travel in days, thats saying alot . . . [/rant]

Why havent I ever seen a space marine in camouflage paint?

anyway ... imperial guard, tyranids and 1 alien race with sophisticated technology is ALL the far future really needs. the rest is for the kids and the kids buy it so good for GW, it's up to us older boys to set the limits for our games and perhaps even redefine the rules and publish them ourselves.

'cause that's the essence of Little Wars?

PS: the wolf pack will make SWEET goblin wolf rider mounts .... i bet thousands of O&G players are ordering them just for that now ... and the thunderwolf for a goblin king on monstrous mount ... after all they have the big spider mount and even the big squig mount they MUST have a bigger wolf mount.

If i remember the old book about the life of sigmar he fights the wolves before the orcs doesnt he?

The first thing I thought when I saw the riderless wolves was "goblins" but then I though the gobbos might be a little too small for them but who cares? Those wolf models are excellent. Well done GW.
