My Sons and I have just started playing Warhammer. One of my boys has chosen the Beastmen, the other has chosen Chaos Knights. I chose the Skaven. Right now all I have is the Island of Blood set and one additional set of Clanrats. So after reading the army suggestions provided on this site, I've come up with the following list at 625 points and I'd like some feedback. I did do a search for army lists of this size and hit on some very old posts (~4+ years ago) that I believe are tied to the old revision codex. If I've posted SPAM I appologize and woudl kindly ask you to redirect me to the topic. Here's my list: 1 Cheiftain, BSB w/shield 2. 29 Clanrats, shields, musician 3. 30 Clanrats, shields, musician 4. Poison Wind Mortar 5. Warlock, Level 1 Wizard, Doomrocket 6. 2 Rat Ogres with Packmaster I believe this list is legal per the Warhammer rule book. I am unsure on the Rat Ogres as I am reading it seems the Giant Rats are more efficient for the same job. Any suggestions would be appreciated. We've played a few games and so far the Poison Wind Mortar has paid back it's points and then some (except the time the crew decided to repay an old debt to the Clanrats). I've won one game and played strong in the second, but took it on the chin with misfires and dispelled spells. Thanks in advance. |

The problem with extreme low point games is that 1/4 of your points doesn't go very far. Quick math tells me you may be over on Lords. Other than that it's a solid list with just the IoB stuffs. AS to the other points, I leave that to those who win.[/b] Edited by Nurglitch IX, 23rd February 2012 - 07:24 PM.

As Bounty pointed out you are a tad bit over the 25% hero allowance. Other than that it looks a fairly solid enough list with the exception of leadership since the Warlock Engineer as the general will only give you a maximum LD 8. You can fix both problems by including a Warlord instead of the BSB and a few other things (though admitted the rerolls may be missed) or the Warlock Engineer (though magic in that size games is great fun! ) Of course if you literally add a bare Warlord to the list and make it at least 715 points then the whole army is fully legal.Hope this has helped a bit and welcome to the Under Empire!

The bread that satisfies all hunger... the peanut that reverses time...

Hi. Welcome to the game I hope it brings you much joy and frustration. I haven't actually checked the points of everything but if Bounty says Lords (heroes...) are over then they probably are ( he is at least half calculator) and I'm not sure if the BSB can be the general so I'm assuming the warlock would have to be and his leadership is very low. One of the main things with a skaven army is keeping your troops in the general's, relatively high, leadership bubble (allowing them to use his leadership for any leadership tests) and also close to the BSB to allow re-rolls on failed leadership tests. I wouldn't worry too much about that right now if these are your first games. Just play a few games with whatever you have for now and get a feel for the rules, sequences etc. and then make a proper legal list. Just to try and at least answer your question though it seems a very balanced list. You have a bit of everything in there. Magic, war machine, core, special etc. I'd say when you come to expand your army buy lots of slaves next. They are invaluable to the skaven warlord. Cheapest troops in the game so you can buy loads, make them 5 wide and (at leas)t 6 deep (usually 10) and the strength in numbers rule combined with the nearby generals leadership makes them excellent for holding up any troublesome enemy unit. |

Thanks all. When I get home tonight, I'll double check the numbers and see what else I can do within what I have per your suggestions. I'll post an update when I get it completed. I do admit, magic can be lots of fun. In the first game, my magic totally dominated the field and opened the path for an easy Skaven victory. The second match didn't go quite so well due to I had a miscast demon on my back for almost the entire game. I think I got off two good shots from both magic and the mortar and that was about it. From then on it was Skaven settling old debts instead of fighting the Beastmen. |

Sounds like you had a lot of fun. Just wait until you play your first 2000 point game. Memorable.

There are a few problems. First of all, you need a general who is not your battle standard bearer. Second, despite what has been said, you're not over in Lords--you don't have any Lords--but you are over in Heroes, where you're only legally allowed 156 points (that's 25% of 625), but you took 167 points. If you want a BSB and a level one Warlock Engineer, you have to get rid of the Doomrocket. Here's my suggested list:
Note that I turned one unit of Clanrats into Skavenslaves, and gave the unit that still was Clanrats a full command. Also, even though your model is undoubtedly a Master Moulder with Prod, that was simply too expensive: I'm counting that here as a regular Packmaster. I think that's a very good list that Olorin has posted there. Looks a lot snazzier than any of my lists too, mainly because I write them on a scrap of note pad paper... ![]() It's a fairly balanced force that probably won't run that much. Edited by Ratty Gnawtail, 24th February 2012 - 08:23 AM.

As Kwokka wisely pointed out, we were getting way off topic here. Since that discussion was valuable in itself, I've split it off into a new thread in the Rules Tunnel called "Leadership Mathhammer". Ratty, you had the one post which could have gone in either topic, so I left it where it was. Please feel free to copy and post the relevant portions in the other thread. |
