Just taking temperature, as it were.

If you were not told what it is marketed as (what name they put on the box), would you call the model a warlord or a BSB?

(Edit: To be clear, I am talking about the one they shifted to Finecast, not the IoB guy.)

I assume this is the guy in question?

If that is the case, I would say that is a warlord. In my opinion, a Battle standard is a lot larger than whatever he is toting around - hell, a standard clanrat banner is even larger than the stick with a dwarf head he is carrying.

How are all the rats of you army supposed to spot that tiny stick in the midst of a fight and be inspired to keep fighting? I say, a Battle standard has to be huge and unwieldy. Preferably something similar to the size of the Doomwheel banner.

Seriously? I'd say neither. He looks like a unit champion at best but if I had to say one over the other I'd say standard bearer.

The one and only.
I agree with hannanibal on that one. The model looks nice but it just doesn't stand out enough to be a bsb or a warlord. But maybe that's because I am used to seeing the IoB guy who sticks out in every direction so much you can't place him in a unit.
Now if the stick with the head on it also had a banner attached then it would make a nice bsb model.

I would say warlord as the dwarf head is too small to be a banner its mote of a trophy. With an impressive base it might look more like a warlord though

Replace the dwarf head with the doomwheel banner, mouunt him on a 40x40mm base and perhaps have him on a rock or something (maybe knee height on the model)

BAM! Awesome battle standard

Answer += 1.

If I had to call it, I'd call it "Chieftain." He's Bigger, but not "OMG LOOK AT THAT RAT" bigger. He's got a staff, but it's not got a decent standard on it. I see a TON of conversion potential in him, which is something I like in my Leader level models, but as is, he's kinda lackluster.

Now if you replace the arms so he's not in heavy armor, Maybe give him a weapon that doesn't look like a broken street lamp, or bump that pole up a little higher and put a plastic card banner on it. Also, he looks really stable for putting onto a warlitter of any kind.

The typical BSB models other armies boast tend to actually have cloth banners, and those banners tend to reach a greater height and size than typical other unit banners in the army.

With all of that being said, I wouldn't see this model as a BSB over a Warlord at all (without conversion or different pole options that could come with the model). I think the IOB Warlord looks more like a BSB than this guy ..and I don't really think the straight out of the box IOB warlord looks like a BSB either.

Now obviously both models can be converted into BSBs without problem, since GW yanked our BSB model a long long time ago.

So in short, I see a warlord first, and would think BSB second (unless the controlling player told me otherwise during deployment).

In answer to the question posed in the starting post, seeing it blind for the first time I'd call it a chieftain/warlord.

However, I agree that it is a very easy job to convert him to a decent BSB. Here's mine from my second ever thread here :P

The doomwheel banner looks so much better as a BSB than on the doomwheel..

What did you replace your doomwheel banner with?

Thanks, everyone.

I was getting ready for a battle the other night and decided to drop Throt for a warlord with hand weapon and shield (biting blade and charmed shield) to save points. I was digging around my bins and racks for would seem to me to be a model that there must be half a dozen version of.

Turns out, finding a warlord equipped this way is no easy task!

In the end I went with the Games Day model since he has a shield and the appearance of the weapon is meaningless since it's a magic weapon.

Still, I got sort of stuck on the model in question and was contemplating throwing a shield on his back or something but then I thought my opponent might mistake him for the BSB...and here we are.

I appreciate the thoughts.

By the way, I have the boxed army BSB and rather like him.
