Hello all, I have recently decided to start painting Warhammer miniatures again, I painted tons of LOTR ones a few years back, after I smashed my knee to pieces and couldn't leave the house haha. I really enjoyed collecting, painting and customizing them all. I just got a bit bored of the whole LOTR thing. So I have looked through all the possible armies, and have decided that Skaven are the best looking and most interesting ones, (And by going off this forum, so have a lot of other people haha). BTW: I don't intend to use them for games, I just enjoy painting and customizing them. I was just wondering if there were any essentials I will need? So far I have ordered the following: Citadel Paint Brush Set Black Undercoat Spray Skaven Clanrats Skaven Plague Monks (These are what made me pick Skaven, they look ace!) Warlord Spinetail (Just because he looks wicked) There is also a book on the GW website that I want, its called 'Uniforms and Heraldry of the Skaven'. I can't seem to order this from their website though. I have loads of paints and will end up getting more once I have my models here. Sorry about the essay haha, I'm really up for getting back into this, I need a hobby haha. Oh and by the way I am from the UK, sunny Wales to be precise. Just incase people start telling me to go shopping in WalMart etc haha. Sorry to be a complete pain, but I've also heard there are Skaven novels available but wasn't sure if it is better to read them in a specific order? I like a bit of background and story, these should give me some ideas. Edited by BadaBing, 9th January 2012 - 03:22 PM.

Croeso, my fellow Welshman; I'm sure you'll find plenty to keep you occupied here ![]() The Uniforms & Heraldry book was a limited print run, however you may still be able to find a few copies lying around in GW stores (IIRC the Cardiff store still had some in stock when I was last there). For Novels, there's the excellent Thanquol & Boneripper series (Grey Seer, Temple of the Serpent, Thanquol's Doom) which are ideally read in that order. Thanquol also pops up in a number of Gotrek and Felix novels, but you don't need to have read them before hand. There're also The Hour of Shadows and Island of Blood mini-novels, which should still be available, these are completely stand alone. Enjoy your stay, and keep an eye on the shadows ![]() |

Welcome to the forums. I managed to score a copy of the heraldry book by asking in my local GW; they had one hidden behind the army books. Always worth asking. |

OK so I got out all my old paints and they are a right mess, so I am going to start from scratch again haha. Are there any essential colours I am going to need to start painting Skaven (fur, teeth, weapons etc). Oh and I added some glue to my list, is there anything I am missing? I dont want to sit down to start painting and be missing something vital haha. |

i know this part isnt relevant but look at nurglitch vll file and it says he's 102 i really doubt that anyway i would say you should maybe get the hell pit abomination kit because theres so many ways to make it and you will have some cool extra parts for other kits you get. |

I don't think I would be able to paint the HPA well enough, I wouldn't want to mess it up lol. I had a Cave Troll from LOTR that I was too scared to paint, its still wrapped up somewhere! I started assembling my ClanRats last night, they look wicked. Everything is smaller than I remember, I may need a good lamp and magnifying glass haha. Quick question: Is it easier to leave the shields off until everything else is painted? |

Well, for basic colours, browns will be a staple Calthan brown seems to be a good base colour after the undercoat. Devlan Mud wash is also very useful for shading. Bleached bone provides a good off-white for teeth and claws. You'll probably want to look at some greens for warpstone and whatever colours you want for the cloth. In regards to shields since you're not worried about gaming with the models I'd paint them separately to make it easier to get your brush at the otherwise awkward to reach sections. |

Perfect, I will order those paints for now, that will get me started. I'm not sure what colour I want the cloth to be yet, white and red looks good but I'm guessing a lot of people go for that theme. Yeah I think I will leave the shields til last, there are some good little details under them lol. |

i was in chester about 7 months ago, its still there.... PS if you enjoy the hobby side of warhammer, get the "island of blood set" its pretty cool, has a nice range of models and includes a second type of army which i think would be fun to paint etc. |

I would say that the The Uniforms & Heraldry book is not really worth it. It's cool if you have some extra money. |

I am going down to a gaming night next weekend to see if it is something I could get into. As far as I know they mainly play 40K, but do play other games, wish me luck haha. |
