Hi people! I'm a newcomer and I have just started playing WHFB with my girlfriend ... obviusly all started from ISLAND OF BLOOD and I would like to implement my Army list for a non-tournament purpose. I think we'll get sporadic battles with some friends of us, but the main purpose is simply to enjoy ourselves in a non extremely competitive way. Enough talk...here's my list: WARLORD: 90 + 3 (halberd to reach S5, enough to rip high elves armour apart). I haven't chose yet the equipment.. WARLOCK ENG.: 15 + 85 (2nd level upgrade) + 8 (warplock pistol) + 30 (doom r.) 60 CLANRATS: TOT. 360 (all with spears, shields and full command group) 16 GIANT RATS + SKUEEL = 48 +8+100 my "special light cavalry unit", maybe useful also to screen Fury units ... 2 RAT OGRES + MASTER MOULDER = 80+8+25 I know: they are few of them but I can't accept to buy those ugly bear-ogres old miniatures...brrr!!! :-S 20 PLAGUE MONKS= 140 + 25 (full command) + WICH STENDARD? P.W. MORTAR: 65 WARPFIRE THROWER: 70 Of course I will put a BSB in a clanrat unit: so 45 + 25 (BSB) + 2 (shield) TOTAL POINTS: 1232 + max100 of W.LORD and 25-30 plague monks magical stendard. My "rule of thumb" situation is not precisely 1 model per 10 points, but about 100 models for 1200-1300 points, so 1 model per 12-13 points. My question is: what would be the next thing to buy? - abomination? - screaming bell/furnace? which one assemble? - Snitch, to make my GF fear every unit of simple clanrats ![]() - stormvermin? Queek Headtaker with them? - Doom wheel? - Doom flayer? The last 3 are the most appealing to me, of course I'll get another 20 clanrats and slaves as well sooner or later... and then I will assemble clanrats in more than 20 models units.. Any thoughts or suggestions? ...and another thing, maybe not so nice to hear for Skaven lovers, but I prefer to NOT buy awful old miniatures: plague monks and stormvermin are the oldest acceptable concept for me....so no night runners & co, ratling gun, teddy-bear-ogres, and other "mickey mouse" mins, etc. ... Thank you very much! ![]() SQUIT!!! |

Storm vermin are new. Just go buy another Island of blood. More for you more for her, evryone wins. I want to just have fun. do not take an abomb. the giant rat units are too big. keep em small and cheap. and don't take spears on the clannies. |

each unit of clanrats can only have one weapon team so you cannot have the poisoned wind mortar and the warpfire thrower the plauge monks should have the plague banner you really need a grey seer as your lvl 4 caster drop the warlocks pistol you should also use some of your clanrats as slaves to get for the future i would get a doomwheel as i love the model and it is very fun. another island of blood sounds good aswell |

I agree about getting some slaves in the list drop the rat ogres and add some. Also agree with the pistol (you can always use those points for slaves). But the unit of Giant Rats I love with Skweel, however if I run them with him I keep a min unit size of 30 Rats + extra packmaster. Can't say much on warlord as he isn't complete really yet and Plague banner is good. Also if you add more another Island of blood is good for filler but look at getting a grey seer (get thanqual as you can always use him as a normal grey seer and bonebreaker as a rat ogre if you don't use him as is). |

Hi, and thanks to you all for the replies! - No problem with the weapon teams ...I play 60 clanrats in 3 groups of 20 of them ....in time I will add 1 or 2 ranks to every unit. Weapon teams are always in different units.- OK for plague banner! - I know grey seer is the great absent in my army but I don't like very much those old minis (G.seers and Thanquol too...), I prefer the new one on the Screaming bell ...but from what I read about the bell it's a little complicated to play (change of tactic: castle tactic etc. ....) - why drop the warlock pistol? it's only 8 points ..almost a dead elf every turn .... I'm not yet at the point where I haven't enough points to play all my clanrats/slaves...Pistols and banners are surplus, additional items I buy to get the same points of my GF - about slaves: as soon I have another 20-40 clanrats I will play them as slaves for sure! ![]() - Doomwheel: I will consider it! Also because it will give me other giant rats, to fill the Skueel "special pack"; regarding this pack I will take another pack leader and keep him away from the front rank ... - about another Island of blood set: I prefer buy some bits. Such as new Lothern guard, another 4 Sword Master of Hoeth and of course clanrats, clanrats clanrats ....and the master moulder .... buying again the full set is not to my liking ... MAY I ASK A FEW QUESTIONS? - If a Warpfire Thrower is within 3 inches from the flank of its clanrats unit and the latter is charged...can the attached weapon team react to the charge? - does adding a Queek + 20 stormvermin, Doomwheel and about 40 clanrat/slaves and the Screaming bell + Plague priest make sense to my list? That would be my ideal armylist ... from my newbie perspective... Thank you for you help!

The weapon team may not stand and shoot when its parent unit is being charged. (I know...i dont like it either, because usually the flamethrower is blown to bits and pieces even before they get to shoot anything...) Why drop the pistol? Pfff... because basically you dont want your WLE to be in combat. In combat he is hardly able to cast anything at anyone. So keep him out of combat. Also, he has WS3 so when he moves thats WS2 . that means you get 33percent chance of a hit and then again about 40 percent chance of a wound (with again probably 10 percent chance of an armoursave or wardsave...) So basically you get to shoot 1 high elf every 3 or 4 turns. For that same amount of points you get 2 4 slaves... Queek and 20 stormvermin... Everyone will say "get more stormvermin"...so I guess I'll just say the same thing. Doomwheel : Great fun ! You will love it. Even though half the time it grinds down your own troops, runs them over and redelivers them as doner kebab... you will become a huge Doomwheel fan after 2 or 3 tries. Screaming bell ... well, its either the screaming bell with grey seer , or the plague furnace with plague priest. Both are good options for a larger army. As for your clanrat units...20 clanrats in one unit is not enough. If those stinking longeared bastards shoot one volley of arrows at one of your units, you probably will loose about 25% of your unit, which , as we all know, is a bad thing. You need about 2 turns to make a charge, so you will loose about 10 clanrats while trying to close in. And as clanrats you really really need strength in numbers. What I'm trying to say is...make sure there are enough clanrats to play with your girlfriend. (hmm...maybe I should rephrase this sentence? ) If you play 1000 points, then a grey seer is not a big must. A plague priest or warlock engineer can also do the trick. If you want to expand your skaven army, I would advice you to buy the batallion set. There are about 18 giant rats in there (and not just 6 as it says on the box). You get an additional 40 clanrats, 2 rat ogres and 3 packmasters as well. And lots and lots of spare bits. (especially heads...) Ask around in the GW shops. There usually are players who would want to share boxes as well. |

Note: you do not have to use this tactic if you take a bell, as has been pointed out there are ways to run a bell offence or defense. I simply believe the most efficient way to make the best use of the bell and all of its potential is through point denial rather than a hammer or anvil unit. |

Thank you, and thanks koffietje for your helpful analysis! ..W.pistol dropped!!@Mathusala0: what is point denial tactic for S.bell? So ...DOOMWHEEL: going, going...GONE!! Mine!! Ah ah!So my wishlist will be in the following order: - Doomwheel (with its giant rats surplus) - another 40 clanrats (or slaves ...) in order to fill 5ft and maybe 6th ranks - Screaming bell/P.Furnace (I think I'll play S.Bell and put the P.priest with the monks I've already have) Alright for you? Next probable Purchase: - Other 20 plague monks OR Quick+30/40 stormvermin - Is it doomflayer worth taking? it's quite alluring to me because it seems a way to make a quite powerful CC assault ...isn't it? - is it Snikch worth buying? Thank you again guys! Your help is appreciated!! (EDITED for minor changes) Edited by GRAAK, 7th January 2012 - 03:38 PM.

Doomflayer isnt really that good to me. Well, others might disagree, but I dont like using it, mostly because where I play , we cram stuff up really close to one another. If you come out of the ground then, you are usually in the midst of combat with what? 20 nightrunners or something? And those nightrunners do nothing much really. Its like bug around a cow while its trying to eat grass (the cow that is, not the bug...) I personally love the plague monks. Just because they look so ... I dont know...so much as if they couldnt care less. I find them a lot more intimidating then the stormvermins. But then again... others might disagree, because those stormvermins get WS4, S4 ... and the plaguemonks get 3 attacks and T4. I think in the long run , stormvermin are more usefull against hordes (ghouls or clanrats or you know...WS3 , S3, T3 models) and plaguemonks do a better job against smaller units. Try them out both and see how it works for you. |

see the castle list in my sig. basic rundown is the bell and its unit stay behind and hold all the points in your list, while your opponent gets stuck fighting through large waves of slaves, worth basically nothing, the rest of the army is based on dealing enough damage to the weaker units in the opponents army and them giving out as few points as possible. it is a very carefully played game and the wins are always close most of the time. |

Got it! Seems quite cool ;-) Thanks! Tonight I've been totally pwned AH AH!! I have spread my skaven all around the table and they get grinded ... never again ... ![]() The only satisfaction has been slay the griffon with the Monks!! And I got near the kill the prince too .. But the first turn signed my doom quite early: double 6 with 3 dice and my Warlock boomed! I was preparing a skitterleap and doomrocket the entire elves formation along its sideline...DAMN!!!! At least he exploded near the enemy general ![]() Returning to my list, the actual magical equipment is: - Doom rocket of course; - warp condenser (I guess that should be the English name...) And for my Warlord: - Warpstone armor - save roll (5+) - Skavenil Tonight I swore eternal love to Plague Monks: 21 attacks + Plague banner is simply AMAZING!!! |
