A friend and I are thinking of starting up WFB. He Night Goblins and of course I Skaven. 1000 points is our beginning level.

Here’s my 1st list I’m thinking that will be a good way to ease myself into the Skaven army style. Tried to keep it simple and cost effective $$$-wise, whilst at the same time offering plenty of troops as a base for expanding.

Please feel free to comment and/or critique.

Warlord – Hvy Armour, Halberd, War Litter - 128 pts

Chieftain – Hvy Armour, Battle Standard Bearer, Shield - 72 pts

30 x Clan Rats – Light Armour, Shiled, Musician, Standard, Clawleader, Warpfire Team - 225 pts

30 x Slaves – Musician - 62 pts

30 x Slaves – Musician - 62 pts

20 x Stormvermin – Halberd, Hvy Armour, Musician, Standard, Fangleader, Warpfire Team - 235 pts

5 x Gutter Runners – Throwing Stars, Extra hand weapon, Slings, Warpdrill - 125 pts

Warp Lightning Cannon - 90 pts

Total = 999 pts

your slave units are too small. so are your vermin. gutter runners should not have a warp drill. bsb and warlord are good. no magic isnt that big a deal at 1000 points.

consider dropping the clanrats/sv. get poison attacks and slings for your gutter runners.

Ill do more when I get home just a quick critique. If Gazz or Borg get on anytime soon they should both be able to do a more intricate breakdown. (I hereby give them permission to use the yellow [which I don't need to give them permission to do])

Mathusala0,

Actually, I think you may be the one who needs permission to edit in yellow! Each color is assigned to a member of the Council of Thirteen for editing purposes and yellow is currently the property of chieftainskritchskritch. Granted, she doesn't use it very often, but it's still hers to claim exclusively, if she chooses. The official colors of each Council member are listed in The Squeekpaw Guide to the UnderEmpire. Some of us use our colors very often; others, not so much. Personally, I'm attached to my orange and wouldn't be totally happy about someone else using it. It's completely up to chieftainskritchskritch to decide how she feels about her yellow.

I think the only unclaimed color is red. But I wasnt laying claim to the color, I just use it for highlights

Im technically not able to edit posts... Unless I became a council member *cough*

I'll do this Mathusala0 style then, albeit in ritalics (just like normal italics, but ratty)

Warlord – Hvy Armour, Halberd, War Litter- 128 pts

good

Chieftain – Hvy Armour, Battle Standard Bearer, Shield - 72 pts

good

30 x Clan Rats – Light Armour, Shiled, Musician, Standard, Clawleader, Warpfire Team - 225 pts

good

30 x Slaves – Musician- 62 pts

Slave units are lacking. Generally you want at least 40, which tends to guarantee at least 1, usually 2 full rounds of tarpitting thanks to the new steadfast rule

30 x Slaves – Musician- 62 pts

See above

20 x Stormvermin – Halberd, Hvy Armour, Musician, Standard, Fangleader, Warpfire Team - 235 pts

Stormvermin are generally used in two fashions, as a hammer and as a magic standard carrier. If you want a magic standard, then ignore the vermin and go for a magic standard on the chieftain. If you want the vermin in, find more points for them and give them a Razor Standard if you can.

5 x Gutter Runners – Throwing Stars, Extra hand weapon, Slings, Warpdrill - 125 pts

As Math said, get rid of the grinder. Gutter Runners are essential for taking out gunlines and war machines, so you need them up and running turn one. This is halted by the Grinder by the fact that they won't always come up turn 1 and might die altogether, which is free points for the opponent. Just not a good idea overall. Drop the Grinder and give them Poisoned Attacks.

Warp Lightning Cannon- 90 pts

Good

Total = 999 pts

Overall not a bad list. If you really intend to keep the stormvermin, I'd say find points to increase their size, but honestly they aren't necessarily going to do you much good right now. Removing the Warp Grinder in favor of Poisoned Attacks gives you 35 points left over. Also, if you noticed, your Stormvermin unit is 10 models shy of your Clanrats but 10 points more expensive. A second unit of clanrats detailed the same way gives you 45 points, enough to get 10 more slaves with 25 points left over, or, and I highly consider looking into this, one naked Warlock Engineer carrying a Doomrocket, which is very aptly named in 1k point games. Dropping a large Strength 5 template on someone at this point value is devastating no matter who you face up. Just take that into consideration, and maybe look into the prospect of a Poisoned Wind Mortar Team, because they can move and shoot while also negating armor saves.

Warlitter's definitely worth it. BSB is good. The Clanrats don't need all the upgrades, I think. Mathusala0 is right about the slaves. I think you need rat darts, too. They're cheap and excellent against frenzied guys.

Just going to add that while stormvermin can be used in mass. they are just inefficient in mass, it wastes points that could be spent on other things. I think at best you could have 2 "mini stars" of Storm Vermin useing all the available tools (skavenbrew, death frenzy, razor banner, decked out warlord, chieftain Tretch, so on)

Warlord – Hvy Armour, Halberd, War Litter- 128 pts

Effective and somewhat affordable, i would lose the Halberd and have a shield plus PA.

Chieftain – Hvy Armour, Battle Standard Bearer, Shield - 72 pts

Run with a Storm Banner and he'll be your best friend.

30 x Clan Rats – Light Armour, Shiled, Musician, Standard, Clawleader, Warpfire Team - 225 pts

I'd run a PWM rather then a WFT

30 x Slaves – Musician- 62 pts

30 x Slaves – Musician- 62 pts

Maybe go up to 35 strong

20 x Stormvermin – Halberd, Hvy Armour, Musician, Standard, Fangleader, Warpfire Team - 235 pts

If your using them as your bunker unit again use a PWM

5 x Gutter Runners – Throwing Stars, Extra hand weapon, Slings, Warpdrill - 125 pts

No need for a Warp Grinder, take PA and slings

Warp Lightning Cannon- 90 pts

Good

Total = 999 pts

You may want to add in a Rat dart or 2, or a Warlock with either a wonder weapon or magic lvl.

Appreciate all the responses.

Few questions -

1. What is a "rat dart" anyway?

2. Am rather partial to Rat Ogres having fallen in love with the Island of Blood sculpts muchly. Thing is, I never see them in lists here? Are they rubbish in the current army book? If so, why?

3. There is no 3rd question.

1/. An affectionate term for a small unit of exactly 5x Giant Rats and 1x Packmaster. These cheap-and-nasties are incredible flankers and great harassment units at a meager 23pts. It's common for larger armies to field several of them for the purposes of out-deploying the enemy.

2/. Rat Ogres are nice and I share your fondness of them, but they simply die too easy for the massive points investment. My understanding is that they only work with Skweel and even then, you'd be better off with Giant Rats.

3/. OH GOD, I'M FADING...

Okay – so a revision running along the lines of the kind advisements given above.

1x Warlord - Shield, War Litter, Poisoned Attacks – 143 pts

1x Chieftain - Shield, Battle Standard Bearer, Storm Banner – 125 pts

30 x Clanrats - Shields, Musician, Standard Bearer, Clawleader, Poisoned Wind Mortar – 220 pts

40 x Slaves - Musician – 82 pts

40 x Slaves - Musician – 82 pts

5 x Gutter Runners – Sling, Poisoned Attacks - 90 pts

1x Warp Lightning Cannon – 90 pts

5 x Giant Rats + Packmaster – 23 pts

5 x Giant Rats + Packmaster – 23 pts

5 x Giant Rats + Packmaster – 23 pts

1 x Warlock Engineer – lvl 1 mage, Doomrocket – 95 pts

Total = 996
Just worried with a list like this that I don’t have anything particularly “big hit” enough aside from the Doomrocket?

Warlord
You got the WLC and the warlock engineer. those are your "big hitters". The slaves are just there to stall the enemy while you blow them to pieces with your wlc and gutter runners and pwm.
And the clanrats are just there to keep an eye out for your warlord.
Its a good list. Especially against goblins.
