My starting collection of ratmen was aimed at a 750-point target. This is basically my 750-point list (with space for 25 points of magic items)

  • Warlord on Rat Ogre Bonebreaker with Halberd, Shield

  • 30 Clanrats with shields, full command, warpfire team

  • 10 Night runners with warp grinder team

  • 17 Giant Rats with 2 packmasters and 1 master moulder with things-catcher

  • 2 Rat Ogres with packmaster

We have a 3-week 1,000 point tournament at a local game store coming up in February, and what I want to know is what people feel would be a good addition to the list. I'm considering some of the following options (all are around 250 points):

Option One: Plagueclaw Catapult and a Plague Priest with censer. Gives me some magic offense, so I'm not ignoring that phase. And makes the list a characterful mix of moulder and pestilens.

Option Two: 30 more clanrats with another warpfire team. Gives a more solid core of infantry and duplication of the warpfire means that one is more likely to get off a good shot.

Option Three: Hellpit Abomination. Would mash faces and draw fire away from the general on Bonebreaker (otherwise he becomes the big nasty on my side).

Option Four: Plagueclaw Catapult, 20 Slaves, Level One Warlock Engineer. Like option one, with more horde and a different feel for the casting.

Option Five: 6 Rat Ogres and 3 packmasters (added to the others, would make two units of 4... ). Would be crazy Clan Moulder-y destruction.

Those are the main options I've been thinking about adding right now. Vote in the poll and let me know your thoughts. Am I overlooking anything that would be great for the 250 points?

Cheers.

Plague Decon
option 6 HPA :) although have to say not very nice (for your opponents) at that point limit.

Although you are lacking some casters plague priest would give you some magic and the plague claw catapult would give you a great big template. however at S2 it can take a lot to wound some opponents.

Back to option 6 and find a way to fit a lv1 Warplock engineer or Plague priest in there too :)

Warlord
Pfff... I dont even know where to start.
Let me start by saying that every list will work just fine, as long as you know what you're doing. So if you want to know if a list works for you...just go ahead and try it. Then analyse your combat and see how you can improve it.
There are however a few things i would like to point out.
SIN: strength in numbers. Thats what makes skaven so strong. They arent powerfull or anything...but there are a lot of them. So basically you need to overwhelm your opponent with your amount of skaven.
Thats why , at 750 points a Rat ogre bonebreaker is (in my humble opinion) a waste of points. Its 65 points that could be spent differently.

I can see why you would want to use the warp grinder team, but then again... those night runners wont do much damage. They ll be like "booh, here where are! " and then just drop dead on the battlefield. I would advice you to use runners with slings and poison attack. Without the warp grinder.

I'm a huge fan of the mini-me's (aka giant rats). But 17 giant rats is not enough to fill a unit with. So i would advice you to drop the master moulder and use those points to insert more giant rats. (And others will then advice you not to use such large amount of giant rats in one unit and instead use the rat-darts formations)

I know, i know...they look really awesome. So even if i advice you not to use them, you'll still stubbornly attempt to put those two magnificent Rat ogres on the battlefield. You'll regret it later on, because they never get any work done...but yet again, in the next game you'll put them back on the tabletop, refusing to believe that they are almost useless. (I understand...I have the exact same problem...Except... I have 4 rat ogres...)

the expansion:
My advice would be to drop the Rat ogre bone breaker, drop the night runners with the warp grinder and either extend the amount or giant rats (while dropping the master moulder ) or to use more giant rats (and still drop the master moulder...) This will free up a lot of points.
At this amount of points you could do the following:
Buy up another round of clanrats with shields and banner and musician. 30 to 40 of them. Add with that a lvl 2 warlock engineer. (They are the cheapest lvl 2 mages, and dont suffer from frenzy .). If you do as I say, you probably even still have points left for a PWM . You could of course also drop the PWM and get some gutter runners with slings and maybe even poison instead. (5 of them ).

Thanks for the comments.

I'm going to keep the bonebreaker for theme reasons, as he's the way I envision my general going into battle. Not every rat can be 100% efficient. Heh.

As for the number of giant rats, conceptually it seems the 17 plus 3 is pretty ideal for meeting two things: Maximizes number of attacks while remaining in a nice and tidy small block (in a 5x4 block with the Master Moulder with things-catcher up front, gives 14 rats attacks plus the MM plus two packmaster whips) WHILE remaining a nice and tidy small block of troops. They'll be able to give average-ish units (even those with a banner and a couple of ranks) a fair fight. And that's enough for my needs I figure.

I'll keep the opinion of Rat Ogres in mind. I run Trolls a lot with my ork and goblin army, and looking at the Rat Ogres I felt hmm, seem to be on par or better than trolls especially if you figure stupidity is worse than vomit is good (if nothing else, there are more opportunities for stupidity to have an adverse effect than the vomit to have a good effect). Thus I'm hopeful about their abilities. I'll have to test them out and see.

I'll try to use the points to bulk out the army in terms of numbers or maximal destruction. Hmm. Decisions, decisions!

Cheers.
