Think of words that end in 'gry'. 'Angry' and 'hungry' are two of them. But there are three words in the english language. What is the third word? If you look real closely, i've already told you what it is. This is my all time favorite riddle, it took me, literally, a million years to figure it out. Can any of you figure it out? It was all but impossible for me. (And no cheating by looking online! )

Going to stick my neck out and say that Gry is actually some obscure word and that that is what you are referring to. Having made my guess I am now off to check Google to see if I am right. |

Gry isn't it isn't it. Also according to Wikipedia you have written the riddle wrong. Language only works as the answer when the riddle is spoken. In the written format your answer has to actually end in the letter set up of gry. |

Mathusala has it... Planescape: Torment taught me that one in a slightly different form. xkcd has also commented on this riddle. |

How can you do a riddle that is based on sound in a written format? It's like me making the tomato tomato comparison in a written format. However a bit of quick Googling has picking me up two words that do end in gry. Spoiler: click to toggle |

Math, how you get it so quick? You've played Planescape: Torment, huh? Not so, Silas. [ 'But there are three words in the english language. What is the third word?' ] is a seperate thought from the first part of the riddle, Signified by the 'but'. There are many variations of this puzzle. And I am jealous that Math did in 4 minutes what took me 2 weeks. MUTATE; Ack! Ninja'd! And [whovever it was, lol, i forgot already] who mentioned planescape taught of the tactical use of the word 'but' to seperate the two thoughts in a confusing (to the reader) way. My first reaction was language and I don't think I have ever seen the riddle before. I dismissed it due to the fact that (according to by initial reaction and Wikipedia) for the riddle to work that way you have to place quotation marks around the word 'language'. Otherwise it doesn’t work. |

No, that isn't right. Oxford Dictionary estimates that there are over 250,000 distinct words in the english language, not even counting inflections and words that belong to multiple word classes.

@Kimzi: It's a spoken riddle that relies on interpretation of the sentence. It doesn't quite work as written for the reasons Silas mentions, but if you've heard enough of them you can work out what it wants. This is a similar one that really doesn't work when written: 'The longest word in the English Language is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanokoniosis. Spell it.' The answer here is of course, I T, since it directs you to spell it. Here're a few excellent riddles I've heard/read in various places:
