Greetings fellow vermin! I am currently paired up for my first escalation league ever and I am starting round one with a 500pt game. I have been toying with some idea's for lists to build on and I would like your opinions if you would care to share. Mind you this is going to be the core of my army from this point forward in the league to build upon in subsequent games. I am also trying to work within the limitations of what I actually own at this time as well. But here goes the lists starting from list A to D. List A: Warlock engineer Lvl.1 wiz: w/ warp energy condenser, warplock p. Clanrats x31 w/ standard, musician, clawleader, spears, and shields Slaves x24 w/ shields, musician, pawleader Plague Monks x20 w/ bringer of word, standard, musician This was my first list, which performed better than I thought it would but I still have little confidence in it at this point. The magic is really it's best attribute. List B: Warlock Eng. w/ Doomrocket, Ironcurse Icon Chieftan w/ BSB Skavenslaves x40 w/ musician, spears, shields Skavenslaves x32 w/ musician, shields Stormvermin x20 w/ musician, standard, shields List C: Warlock Eng. w/ Doomrocket, Ironcurse Icon Chieftan w/ BSB Skavenslaves x40 w/ musician, spears, shields Skavenslaves x33 w/ musician, shields Stormvermin x12 w/ musician, standard, shields, WFT List D: Warlock Eng. w/ Doomrocket, Ironcurse Icon Chieftan w/ BSB Skavenslaves x40 w/ musician, spears, shields Skavenslaves x32 w/ musician, shields Plague Monks x22 w/ musician, standard I know none of these lists are ideal but they are the best I have come up with so far. At any rate I could really use some input on these lists or any ideas to the contrary. Thanks!

Skavenslaves really want to be fielded in blocks of 40+ to work. Perhaps in such a low point value as 500, you can get away with lower, though. Thankfully, slaves are cheap enough you can probably drop a command option or two to fill your blocks up a bit. List A has a caster, which I like, but lacks a BSB which is fatal. It's either-or at this level, so take the BSB. List B is interesting... but why spears on the 40 unit? you could drop those for enough skavenslaves to fill out the second unit to 40 as well. The slaves aren;t there to kill things, they're there to hold things up for the SV to kill List C... I think more bodies of SV as in list B serves you better than a WFT -- while really, really deadly you can;t really afford it exploding or toasting your own troops when you have so few points to begin with. List D is a lot like B, but with plague monks instead of SV. I don't typically use either of the two, but something tells me SV might be better since you're obviously not taking furnace or plague banner My opinion is B, shifting points around a bit to get 40 slaves on both units. You could also probably convert the shields to more rats, but that's a 50/50 proposition on survival. I tend towards slaves with no gear, but with shields its a personal preference. Spears though... remember that spears+shields loses the parry save HW+Shields has, and that the extra rank of attacks is still an extra rank of *slave* attacks. So yeah, my main point of advice is to drop spears from slaves. |

Thanks for the input! Sometimes I get to thinking about it too hard. It's a lot clearer when you get an outside opinion I think. I agree about the spears but I can't change them. You see, I first started modelling my minis out to be a x40 unit of clanrats with shields and so I modeled the rest to be a unit of x60 clanrats with spears and shields. I hadn't originally planned to run any slaves . Of course knowing what I do now I realize how dumb that sounds. This was before I had played any games in the new edition mind you. So unfortunately i am having to run my clanrats as slaves to fit as many rats as possible into this tiny list. Normally I run them as a horde In retrospect, I would have probably modeled my ratties quite differently.I think you are right about List B though. I think the SV are a bit safer than the PM's seeing as how they aren't frenzied and since my other two units are slaves, they won't cause panic if they explode! Or do you think I should lose the unit of slaves with spears and take a unit of SV and a unit of PM's instead? All in all though my main concern is having no magical presence on the field. That really scares me I am still unclear as to weather or not my opponent is playing greenskins or empire. Either way I am not familiar with going up against either one of them in this edition, so I don't really know how I could change my list to best fit my foe. Also, I was looking into fielding some rat darts at some point. Do you think anyone would begrudge me making them out of the extra big rats you get on the plague monk sprues? |

If you mix up the models, you can avoid being "stuck" with spears -- slaves could be expected to wear/wield whatever they can scavange, so as long as your front rank has obvious HW and only about half the unit appears to have spears, you can get away with using the spear rats as HW wielders unit without really breaking WYSIWYG. Inform your opponent ahead of time that the equipment is, in fact, HW. It'll even have the benefit of making your ex-clanrat slaves look like an unruly mob rather than a (more) disciplined clanrat regiment. |

Thanks your right! I was also toying around with this idea for a list. What do you think? List E: Warlock Eng. w/ Doomrocket, Chieftan w/ BSB Skavenslaves x40 w/ musician, shields Plague Monks x20 w/ musician, standard Stormvermin x17 w/ musician, standard |

We re stronger in large packs. So either do 37 plague monks or 37 storm vermin. But not half of each. Making lists at such small numbers would require you to first see what your opponent puts on the table. So take everything with you and try to counter all he /she has. |
