It really depends "how long" the rat or rats have been domesticated a second generation domestic rat can still be dangerous if neglected.

From my personal experience boys are easier to deal with you just have to have them drained of if you know what I mean.

I don;t get what you mean by 'how long the rats have been domesticated'. Rats are either domesticated or wild. Rats you buy from a pet shop or breeder are domesticated, rats you find outside in gardens/fields/wherever are wild. Domesticated rats kept in pairs wouldn't be dangerous towards each other unless they weren't introduced properly (which is why it's best to get a pair of siblings to start off with). Unless you, say, starve them until they are forced to kill each other to survive, there wouldn't even be any issue of that, and I'm pretty sure no person in their right mind who comes actively looking for advice on rats is going to neglect them. Keeping them singly iwould be neglectful and also kinda cruel.

@Mathusala: No problem. If you need anymore help, lemme know :)

I also met a really nice looking paving slab offcut when I was there. There was a mutual interest in each other as it let me rest my head on her during the night. Then I was a bit of a twat and left before it woke up in the morning. Ha ha, take that you slab!

Well that is not strictly accurate No animal goes instantly from wild to domesticated which is why I mentioned generations.
Rats from a shop SHOULD be domesticated but I would ask how long they have had them IF they are siblings.

My friend had a bad experience with some so called pet shop rats which is why I would ask for more information about them.
They where fine for the most part but if left unchecked for more than a few hours they started to well make a break for it and they always fight with each other in the end one of them killed all the others.

Though I am sure it is an isolated situation

If rats are mistreated (like any animal) they will have horrible temperaments towards each other and people.
From the small bit of information I've read (and I could be terribly wrong) sometimes pet shops have care-takers who aren't %100 sure on how to handle rats- which end up distressing them and hurting them unintentionally.
If you are really nervous about pet-shop rats you can always try to find a local breeder.
