So I am looking into getting a tablet computer for my 18th birthday and was wondering if anyone could give me some advise on which type to get. Ipads are the best known but they are also more expensive so I was hoping anyone out there who has a tablet computer could give me some advise.

I use a Wacom Bamboo Fun tablet- which is a very good brand with a lot of different sizes. They can be rather expensive (around to $200 to $400+ (to be honest this might not be as accurate as I think, it depends on where you buy your tablet)) but they are good quality and very easy to use. I adore mine as it came with Photoshop (though I'm not sure whether other tablet brands do.) Wacom tablets are good ones to get quality, but if you wanted to start out with something easy to use I would go with something cheaper- as, so I was told, they don't take a lot of time to master with the pressure features (that can be extremely sensitive to pressure the higher the quality.) But I HIGHLY recommend the Wacom series of tablets! They are worth every penny and are very good quality! |

Am fairly sure Silas wanted a serious answer. My reply would have to be what do you plan to do with the tablet? Will you need 3G or is wifi ok? Is it for on the move ? What programs will you want access to ? |

Yes for once I was actually being serious. Mainly I would want to be able to sue it on the move both around college and on trains when I am going places. 3G would be us full but probably depends on how much my godfather gives me for my birthday. As for programs I would need an equivalent to word obviously plus likely some of the basic programs for doing spreadsheets, PowerPoint and if it’s possible image editing. As you can probably guess I am rather in the dark as to what to go for hence why I am asking. |

In that case I would recomment going with an Android based model, which includes support for Google Docs. Not being a tablet owner myself, (I prefer full laptops personally), I unfortunately cannot reccomend a specific model. All I can say is try to find one running Version 3.2 (Honeycomb), or wait a couple of months for version 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) (I'm not making this up, That's what Google named the versions). I hope this helps. |

Depends on what you're sick with obviously, but since you didn't specify I'd go with a nice dose of Taxol. Because BMS (the drug company that makes it) gave our department loads of pens and mouse mats... On a more serious note I personally wouldn't bother with a tablet. Since I can touch type (at 50wpm, Like A Boss!) I just find it horribly annoying when I don't have access to a proper keyboard and I stand with the group who have trouble figuring out what a tablet is for. Can't really use it as a phone (without looking really silly), can't type on it, it doesn't have nearly the type of capabilities or versatility as a proper laptop. I don't think I'd actually use it for much other than being a big media toaster. Although it would probably excel at that function. I'd go with a small laptop instead. I have an Acer 4820t and I love it! 14" screen and really light means I can hike it round with me wherever I go. Fits into a rucksack very easily. Can do everything a bigger laptop can do as well, has a DVD drive, excellent battery life, only downside is the keyboard's a bit tacky and plasticy. A small (but not netbook size) laptop and a smartphone for phone, mp3, camera, other appy nonsense, etc is the perfect combination imho. Of course everybody has different demands on what they want out of their technology and it could well be that a tablet is perfect for you. If you are set on a tablet then I'd give +1 to Ratling to go with Droid based stuff. I never particularly liked Apple. (Don't get me wrong, Apple is great, just personal preference.) |

I' d go with Sketch here... Specially if you intend to use excell and stuff. Laptops are much cheaper and a lot better for what they are capable of. |

If you truly want a multi purpose option then you should just shell out and get a £300 pounds laptop it will last you longer you can customize it and upgrade where possible later and all in all would have a longer and more viable shelf life. It is a doodle to install a SSD hard drive into a laptop and makes them run amazingly fast. I will stop here before I go into full geek mode. A tablet will struggle with some aspects but if your determined to go Tablet then get Android |

I have a laptop (got it about 3 years ago now) the reason I'm after a tablet is so that I have something I can use on the move. My laptop is light but it still requires me to carry it in a laptop bag while a tablet is much smaller and more portable. If you guys think it wouldn’t be worth it due to me already having a laptop than I will defiantly take that into consideration. |

Oh ho- we are talking about that type of tablet! I cannot help you out there, but I have to agree with the others a bit. By the sounds of it you have a really good functioning laptop. If you need something for specific programs like that, then you might just want to stick with it- unless you absolutely need to have it. Or you could always try to save up for a smaller one, but not sure how it would do memory wise. |

You can always get a notebook there are rather small but you might just be better up spending the cash to upgrade your laptop.
