Hello to all, I am new to warhammer, and i have decided to start a Skaven Army. With that being said i need help on creating a army list. All i have is a rule book (hardcover) and skaven army book, i seen the island of blood set but i did not want to buy it if i really do not need it. My goal is to have a 3000 pt skaven ary to start, i have set aside money to do so. Basically i need help creating a 3000 pt army and i really dont know where to start. I see that 8th is a new rule book and i gathered that large core options are they way to go, to im assuming slaves and clanrats will be mainstay. Any help would be appreciated. |

I'd say you want 3 or 4 IoBs. You want units of 40. And I would go with 4 units of clanrats and 4 units of slaves @3k |

The only thing you can really go wrong with is: Rogres jezzails poisoned wind globadiers sencer bearers weapon teams (please, no ratling-guns, the rest is OK to use) 3000p is abit much for a starter army, a 1000p is starter........ But try build a list, a vew tips: Use: grey seer Abominations Plague monks with plague banner Slaves or clanrats Stormvermin Also, since you plan on 3K, we have a unofficial rule to make a good army, 1 model per 10 points, so try to include at least 300 models at 3k points. This shouldn't be to hard. |

@willqueek, the 1 model for 10 points isnt so much a rule, mainly i just try to hammer that into people as a good starting point so that they have to numbers to play competitively. but, he is correct, at 3000 points, 300 models would be ideal, at that many points you will NEED a grey seer (no one playing competitivly is going to not bring a level 4 castor) id say get at least 2 units of clanrat and 2 units of slaves, the slaves should be at least 50 and the clanrats at least 40. clanrats should have shields, slaves are optional, full command on clanrats, only music for slaves. they will give you 180 models at 654 pints, pretty cheep then youll need a bunker unit, at this points level it should probably be a large unit of clanrats, so 50, same gear as above. 230 models, now 879 points to have a combat fighty unit id go for a big unit of plague monks with a furnace say 50 (at 3000 points you can go nutz) so now 280 models at 1458 points. that leaves you a little over 1500 points to engorge yourself on rare choices, characters, magic items, weapons teams, gutter runners, extra, which should EASILY fill out the last 20 models. |

A box of night runners and the sling arm kit should make about 14 or so gutter runners with slings. | |

I have just started a skaven army myself. I picked up 2 IoB sets, 1 box of clanrats, 1 box of plague monks (working on adding a second), 6 rat swarms (got them used for $18), and an old screaming bell from 1992. I threw a rat ogre onto the screaming bell to make it fit a little better with the modern version seeing as how I ended up with 6 identical rat ogres. I also ended up converting a team of jezzails with some old kroot rifles i inherited (cause who in their right mind would pay $50 for three of them). Unfortunately In every game I have played they have been more a hindrance than a help so I am going to not take them anymore (a shame cause they look so kewl ). At any rate, with all that I can still only build around 1500pts legally. If I were you i would stick to just buying one IoB set unless you want multiple identical models (course it doesn't really matter with the clanrats). The nice thing about the IoB set is that it contains Poison wind mortars, which you can't get from gw any other way that I am aware of. The regiment boxes also leave you with some extra bits you may find useful down the road. So far it looks to me like the skaven are one of the most difficult armies to collect, simply because of the vast numbers we need to field, and the diversity of unit types.
