Local Gamers Forum.; Are they worth it?

...you can still call me Rusty Tincanne if you want, though.

In the area I currently live, gamers use a Yahoo Groups page for communicating. After years of hanging out here I think it is lame. There are no subforums (all chat is intermingled), and it is difficult to follow one topic because it reads like email responses.

In other places I have lived, the FLGS would have a chat forum of its own, similar to an invision/zetaboards set up. Miniature gaming, card gaming and RPGs all had sub sections that were further delineated.

That said, the YahooGroups traffic in this area can be as little as 0 posts over several months. Though, when it picks up, it really picks up.

What are your thoughts on having a full forum for local gaming? are they worth it? Should I just encourage the FLGS to host something (though they barely have a working website... ) or start one up?

My club have a Zetaboards forum and it works very well.

It is useful because we help each other with painting and discuss different new things and stuff.

We also write information about club days where people can get a game against someone and also attend to tournaments easy. People at my club often dirve with each other to tournaments other places and it helps in that regard too.

Of course the most "popular" forum is the off-topic one... :D

I think it could be very good for your FLGS.

It all depends on the members.

If they're the type of people to check their internet sites on a regular, daily basis then it'll work well. But for many people checking will slip the mind, something to be done only once in a while. Then when they see nothing new, they go away again, and the next person sees nothing new, and so on. Only when someone posts and by chance everyone sees are there those brief booms.

If the players in your local group already use forums, then adding one more should work. Otherwise, I wouldn't hold too much hope for the idea.

Could we not some how bride these people into coming here?

While having a local forum is great lack of activity can be a big issue which ultimately is the downfall of sites. I don't check it because no1 posts there no more!

I forgot to mention that, thanks.

The strange thing is that most of the guys at my club don't use any other forums at all (maybe they use Warseer or something).

I agree with above.

Our group-forum is a freeforum, (see google) There are 3 admins and no moderators, everything goes fine.

My local club has it's own forum which is split into lots of subforums a bit like The Underempire (though not on such a scale) for anything ranging from club activities to people buying/selling stuff. People are always active on there whether it's questions about rules, testing out new systems (such as Malifaux) or just simply arranging games.

It works well but relies on members actually using it, and as with most forums there are a core of users that post regularly, myself included.
