Hey all,

I've played Skaven forever and I am just now in a position to consider starting a new army. The thing is I have a pretty solid group of friends and I don't really want to play something thats already been taken by one of them.

TK/Ogres/WoC/LM/Vamps/Daemons

That being said, I'm a little picky and have decided I wouldn't enjoy dwarves or empire, unless they came out with a new book that offered some new choices and such.

What do you think will be the next Fantasy book to be redone?

I am contemplating trying either Brettonia or Wood Elves. The former I would probably enjoy right now, the later would need a new competitive book. Either way, if a new book were to appear soon I would wait for that to come out first.

Brettonia or Wood Elves struggle against seasoned players.

But since you mentioned Elves have you considered the DE? Very strong and many options.

I started Wood Elves about two months ago after deciding that I really liked Wood Elf aesthetic and fluff and that the book would be viable in a competitive environment... well, hopefully sometime within a year from then. I've started visitng the Wood Elf forum though, and a lot of people seem to think that it's even a possibility that Empire and Vampires could get updated before Elves on account of those two armies likely selling more (although I doubt that Wood Elves would get ignored until both of those armies got updated). I also hear that Wood Elves are likely behind Dwarves, since the latter is a comparably old and more popular army.

The most grounded (but unfortunate) rumor I've heard is that Wood Elves will be seeing an update around Fall 2012 since there's a novel release scheduled for that time and GW likes coordinating the two. If I personally had to guess, it'll be Dwarves, then either another army (probably Bretonians or Vampires) or Elves, then whichever of the two didn't get an update.
Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage...

Bretonnia most likely will be getting the next army book, which will be after the Necron codex as they generally alternate Fantasy and 40k army books/codices. Also, the only testing rumors on Dakka Dakka and Warseer have been about rebalancing the costs of Bretonnia units - so thats my bet. Personally, I think they need it the most with the whole unit type of cavalry suffering greatly in 8th and the lack of a proper horde and/or tar pit type unit that is so strong in 8th.

From what I heard around Games Day there are rumours that the next army book to be re-done is Empire. Also around Christmas time there may be a scenario book coming out for fantasy, kind of like what Battle missions was for 40K.

I really hope it isn't Empire personally, they're a powerful (perhaps even Tier 1) army in the current ruleset, and many other books need an update much more.

*Sighs* What are Empire going to get now? Aircraft? Machine guns? (well depends how we count what their outriders already have!) Electric lighting?

I agree with Blader that there are other armies that need updating far more, pity Empire are one of the more popular armies...

The more popular armies get more attention I have no doubt it is likely empire. Even though I truely believe dwarfs need it more than ever. Gunline armies don't cut it when you can guaratee a turn 2 charging spree.

In my opinion, Empire and Vampire Counts are the armies (that have not been updated to 8th edition) that are on the bottom of the list on how they need to be updated.

I think Dwarfs, Bretonnians and Wood Elves deserve a new book. GW should take advantage of Dwarfs lists being very similar by giving them a new books.

Therefore I think that Dwarfs is the smartest update on GW's half, but Bretonnia and Wood Elves need it more.

in the grand scheme of things empire and VC have had fairly recent army books, and VC have just had a few things released for them via WD.

I don't even remember when WE or Bretts were last updated...

Funnily enough both empire and vampire counts have been rumoured on Warseer to be much closer to a new release than people expect. :)

From what I gathered in one discussion it could very well be the Wood Elves who are getting updated.
Perhaps GW will be updating the armies that need it the most to fit with the current rule book.
How were the last army books updated? Just randomly?

It wasn't that bad; fifth edition models for the most part look truly awful (and most of the exceptions were Skaven in my opinion), where Bretonnians look decent and the Wood Elf battalion is beautiful.

Also, Vampire Counts do need an update in all fairness. Have you compared the cost of their core choices to Tomb Kings' skeletons? I think GW could solve the problem with a simple repricing, though... Wood Elves need an update really badly, but as a Wood Elf player I wouldn't mind if everything in the book just got dropped in points cost (glade guard and glade riders, I'm looking at you especially) until we got updated. Dwarves and Bretonnians, on the other hand, are reasonably playable in a competitive environment but nonetheless could use rules and playstyle changes.
