Hello all. =)

I've been a big fan of Skaven for many years, but due to financial constraints, I've only been able to actually stop dreaming and start creating an actual army to play with now. I was hoping to get some feedback from more seasoned players (i.e: people who have played at least one game, unlike myself) of any suggestions to go with without being too cheesy.

Here we go...

2000pts
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Grey Seer w/ Screaming Bell
- Magic Item: Shadow Magnet Trinket
- Magic Item: Warp-energy Condenser

Warlock Engineer
- Lv1 Magic Upgrade
- Warlock-augmented Weapon
- Rat Hound Bodyguard

Assassin
- Magic Item: Infernal Bomb
- Smoke Bombs

Clanrats x32
- Hand weapons & Shields
- Command Group

Clanrats x24
- Spears & Shields
- Command Group
- w/ Ratling Gun Weapon Team

Stormvermin x20
- Shields
- Command Group
- Magic Banner: Shroud of Dripping Death

Gutter Runners x9
- Poisoned Attacks
- Deathrunner Commander
- Magic Item: Weeping Blade
- Smoke Bombs

Poison Wind Globadiers x6
- Bombadier Commander
- Magic Item: Death Globe
- w/ Poison Wind Mortar Weapon Team

Rat Ogres x3
- 2x Packmasters
- Master-bred Rat Ogre

Doomwheel
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm currently unsure which regiment of Clanrats to lob the Screaming Bell in for best effect. Also, I'm in two minds about trading some of the Gutter Runners and all of the Globadiers (sans the mortar maybe) for some Plague Monks.

Hmm without being too cheesy? Leave the HPA at home then as not only is it scarily good, opponents sometimes see it as very cheesy. But onto your list:

The Grey Seer isn't bad, the bell's ward save and his shadow magic should protect him a bit from shooting. However be careful as Seers can die very quickly in combat.

I would alter the Warlock Engineer a bit by taking away his augmented weapon and instead giving him the condenser (he afterall does get the choice for Warp Lightning while the Seer has to get lucky.) The rat hound you can keep but points can be better spent elsewhere.

Key thing missing a BSB. Without one we don't get that handy reroll or combat bonus. Dropping the assassin could be an idea or at least taking away some of his wargear.

The Clanrats and Stormvermin probably need some more numbers to keep their LD bonus, especially against shooty armies like Dwarf-things. Perhaps drop the Ratling gun as of late its uses aren't brilliant.

The Gutter Runners are a great idea however I would either drop the unit down to five or try splitting them into two units of five. Don't forget the ever useful slings for those poison attacks so it might be an idea to drop the Deathrunner's Weeping blade and smoke bombs.

Globadiers and the Rat Ogres depend on the player more though they might be a good place to shave a few points off for the rest of the army.

Hope this helped (and wasn't too cheesy) and welcome to the UnderEmpire. :)

Mutate: Lastly this thread should be in the army list section, though this should be fixed fairly soon.

Thanks for your tips and the welcome. =) I should probably clarify when I say cheesy (didn't even realize the pun before, haha), I mean using cookie-cutter army builds and such. I want to be a little unconventional (as lets' face it, the Skaven reek of it), but not to the point where I'm going to be a walking target for easy wins. It's probably worth mentioning that my primary opponents are going to be Orcs & Goblins (mostly Night Goblin-themed), I think Dark Elves and a ragtag set of Vampire Counts.

I'm not really fond of the Hell-Pit Abom., so that's a non-issue.

A friend of mine at the local GW tried to sell me on a Warp-lightning Cannon, but I'm not really fond of having giant artillery within an army that essentially thrives on mobility.

The reason for the melee-enhancing gear on the Warlock Engineer was mostly because I will be merging him with the Stormvermin in-game. I know of the necessity to keep mages out of the line of fire and given the Grey Seer is riding the bell, I need to adequately protect him too. I thought of adding the weapon and rat hound for the extra oomph plus as I'm using the new Ikit Klaw (awesome model, just picked it up) as the model of choice, the idea of him having a pet gives off a bizarre nostialgia vibe; Dr. Klaw from Inspector Gadget. X'D

By BSB, do you mean a Standard Bearer?

I am starting to think of bolstering the Clanrats more, given that I'm not into using 'Slaves.; prolly go up to 30 a piece or even more.

I'm also now looking at ditching the Rat Ogres given how easy it sounds to kill them at range. Maybe shave them, the Globadiers and move the mortar to my other Clanrat unit and invest in the Plague Monks. Perhaps I can move the Assassin into the Gutter Runners unit and remove a few of them too; I didn't know if slings were really any use.

Any other suggestions or tactics are welcome. =)

Oh if it is for being unconventional you most certainly don't have to listen to what i've said.

I like the idea of a Dr Klaw like villain (maybe have the Grey Seer as a Dr Evil like character from Austin Powers? :P ) Though bear in mind Warlock Engineer's have no armour (unless give warpstone armour of course) and can quickly die in combat.

BSB- Battle Standard Bearer.

Other than that have a look through our tactics pages as well as clan themed ones for some ideas whether conventional or not.

Having just come off a tourney, I must say the Warp Lighting cannon is a must for me and I will NEVER leave home without it. Specially sinve now every army seems to have a huge multi wound monster.

Plague Monks pushing a furnace with a Plague Priest is also a must have for me as well, they are brilliant in CC specially with the Plague Banner.

One more try to revamp my list. I've been scurrying around the forum browsing playstyles and general tactics and think I've solidified the army a lot and done away with most of the fluff.

I took one weapon team out (due to the bell's presence with the main unit of c'rats) and removed the c'rat commanders and s'vermin shields. This gave me an awful lot of points to flesh out my regiments for a higher body count, given my lack of slaves. I will be interchanging the equipment between banners and normal weapons and armor on the BSB dependent on my opponent: this is just for basic structure. One of the characters will be in the s'vermin regiment at all times, depending on how well I can get my warlock engineer behind enemy lines for some cracklin' goodness.

Thoughts would be much appreciated. :)

several notes.

1: when writing lists dont say "with command group" when you actually mean " with standard and musician" A comand group implies that the unit has both of those AND a sarg.

2: the shadow magnet trinket serves no point on the sear as he already has a 4+ wardsave. get him an earthing rod as he is your general and you dont want him dieing turn 1 to a miscast.

3: you want the poisoned wind mortar. you also want the blade of anti heroes.

4: get ride of the warlocks weapons. level 1, condenser, and doomrocket (unless you think its cheese) You do not want to spend 50 sum odd points at making this guy hit hard and then realize that HE DIES TO ANY UNIT IN THE GAME SINCE HE HAS NO ARMOR. also get rid of the rat hound

5. your horribly low on body count. you need to outnumber your opponent to win as skaven. your 75 models short of this. you NEED slaves to win. if you dont want to get steamrolled by the first DS army you fight

6: the gutter runners do not need a sergeant or a smoke bomb.

7: plague monks should have the plague banner and neither of the banners you currently have are very good.

1/. Umm, sorry? Not exactly something to get too narky over, but I'll note it for future reference.

2/. The shadow magnet trinket confers a -1 shooting penalty against the bearer as well as any unit he is in. Given that my bell is going to be a freaking huge target, I don't really see that as a bad investment.

3/. Ok. On the Blade of Anti-Heroes though, that's assuming I don't give him a magic banner, which I'm still debating.

4/. I've already ditched the augmented weapon mentioned earlier, so I'm not sure what you're referring to here. You've worded that in a confusing manner and I don't know whether you mean to ditch everything and use the engineer as a doomrocket whore alone, or to take one in addition to the wizard upgrade and condenser.

5/. Already stated that I don't want to use slaves; I've seen plenty of Skaven players win w/o them.

6/. Would you suggest maybe going down to a unit of 5 w/ commander or simply staying with six basic models? Extra attacks are my focus and the smoke bombs are more a security investment seeing as I could only include one unit.

7/. I'm planning to ditch the banner on the monks; not convinced with ditching the one on the s'vermin yet. I may interchange items between the various models depending on my opponent (i.e: removing the infernal bomb from my assassin against certain opponents to take said banner).

---

In any case, thanks for your input.

Then the slaveless skaven must have either been playing god awefull players, or wiodelves, skaven without slaves makes us lose our #1 advantege, body count. Without them our opponents can blow through units faster (that are worth poin tr s) actually reach our bunker units, ext ext.

And I meant have a condenser and doomrocket both on that engineer.
