So I don't think anyone will want to miss this. There's a type 1A supernova occuring right now in the Pinwheel Galaxy which is a mere 8 megaparsecs away. As such it is a supernova that's visible with a decent pair of binoculars or a small telescope. This is a pretty rare occurence. More information on how to find it in this video: The skies were pretty clear tonight so I had a shot at looking for it. I probably did see it but there was so much stuff around I couldn't be absolutely sure about which dot of light it was. It's pretty tricky with just a pair of binoculars too. They're not exactly stable and trying to extrapolate a decent equilateral triangle from Alcor and Alkaid proved to be an exercise in futility. I'm going to have to research up that section of sky a bit more and I'll have another shot on Friday when it's reached peak brightness. I know one person for sure who has a telescope but I haven't talked to her in months. Surely she wouldn't mind though... In the name of Science...Has anyone else had any luck? |

For SCIENCE!! I'll have to set up my telescope on a not-so-rainy night, don't want to miss this, especially since I have a High-Energy Astrophysics module when I'm back in uni ![]() I'd ask if I could use the university's telescopes but I'm sure they already know about it

@WillQueek: For ease of translation I'll try and put this as simply as I can. A star in the night sky has exploded and it is close enough to be seen with a pair of binoculars or a telescope. This is a very rare event so we want to see it
