How to get started; what to buy

I am new to Skaven and starting it as my 2nd Army. Just a few questions on what I should buy to start out. I was thinking: Skaven Box set, abomb, SB, DW, WLC, PM, GR, 3 assassins, and engineers and a few lords and heroes. I d like to going sorta heavy on war machines and use the slaves or clan rats as charge bait and have them close to the war machines in case they misfire. Id like to put a GS on the SB since it sounds like it would be easier to cast the dreaded 13th and the curse of the horned rat. Let me know what you guys think.

Ultimately it's up to what you prefer on looks. You dont want an army that you're not going to like looking at. Second comes the winning factor for the gaming side of things. Aboms, and WLC's are a must, so start off with one Abom and 2 cannons IMO. Lot's of Clanrat models. Warpfire throwers are a good thing to keep around. I have three of the metals, and use about 1-3 of them every game. Slave models are a must at least 50 starting. A doomwheel looks nice but you'll find that you wont be using it every game. It does look cool when its painted up however, I can say that much for it. Gutter Runners are a must. You can buy Night Runner models and easily use them as Gutter Runners. It's a cost effective way of going about it. Grey seer model a must. Assassin model a must. Probably only need one unless you want to do a more Eshin themed army. thats all I got.

Looks good so far. I would not recommend 3 assassins though. Maybe one. You will need a seer, a warlord, a coupla engineers for sure. 80 or so clan rats, 120 or so slaves. 6 to 20 gutter runners.

Also, take a look at the army lists, you can get a feel of what's used at different point levels.

Don't forget about extra 40x40 bases. You can easily make filler displays to put into the units to increase your model count.

I have always wondered what happens with unit fillers if you take casualties.

Say one is worth 5 models, and you take 3 casualties. Do you just have to make a mental note?

Suppose it depends on how cool your opponent is with it

The key word in the term "unit fillers" is "fillers". A majority of your unit should be made up of actual models. That way, if you lose three models, you have three individual models to remove. Then, if you lose three more models and are down to a five-model unit filler, you can take away the five-model filler and replace it with two loose models that you had removed earlier. It's just like with money when you're making change. Otherwise, if all you've got is fillers and you have no loose models to put in, then I'd say you lose your whole filler!

For the clan rats and slaves do you think it would be a better idea to go with the IOB box set or just pick up the Skaven Box set? My thoughts on the DW were about the same lol it does seem pretty hit or miss. However it does seem like it would be effective right up front surround by a bunch of slaves in case it goes crazy and then putting the WC on the flanks with an abomb so where in a middle flank and the GS on the SB in the back. Then Have your engineers pressing behind with PM and rat ogres in the back ranks. Have the GR and assassin take out characters behind enemy lines specifically wizards. That was what my strategy was going to be based on. Thanks for the help. Again any ideas are great. Cost really isn't an issue so all ideas help.

if you wanna start skaven try this:

Battlion and Island of blood
sell the high elves.
Buy: Doomwheel or Abomb or a WLC and a set Plaque monks

What you then got:

Warlord / Chieftain / BsB
Warloch engineer
Poisoned wind mortar
Warpfire thrower
80 Clanrats / Slaves ( try convert the spears to handweapons, Hw's are better in combination with shields )
4 Rat-ogres
6 Giant rats
4 Packmasters
40 Plaque monks
Doomwheel / Abomb / WLC

And you can make a 1500 points army at least Buy some stormvermin and more clanrats, maybe ad 1 or 2 rare choises and you got 2000 ad more to make 2500

With the plan i showed you you can get an army pretty fast.

The main thing you will need is massive amounts of Clanrats/Slaves (and lots of brown paint) but otherwise it all depends on what kind of army you want to field.

120 slaves

So brutal

I really dislike the idea of a skaven army with that many slaves unless it has something like 120 clan rats too. I’m not sure if I have this opinion because it doesn’t fit my idea of skaven or I just fear the idea of having to buy that many slaves.

Well unless you're buying citadel slaves it will cost exactly the same if you use them as clanrats or slaves so cost shouldn’t be a problem.

I decided to collect an all metal skaven army

Finding 40 3rd edition metal slaves almost destroyed me
