Can I cast the 13th spell whilst in combat or at a unit in combat?

Before 8th edition, spells had to state that they could be cast into close combat. This still goes for the "old" spells (that have no typing), so as it doesn't stand that it can be cast into close combat you cannot.

Often wondered this myself.

Personally, I'd say yes. If you wipe the unit, just place the new Clanrat unit 1" away from who they were fighting.

They cannot be cast into CC as unlike the Scorch controversy, Dreaded 13th clearly has a target, and doesn't have a rule allowing it to be cast in CC, and so it can't.

I believe this has been brought up several times before.

Playing skaven to minimize randomness is like going to prom with your sister, you can do it if you really want, but in the end everyone will still laugh even if you do get lucky.

I always take at least one Warpfire Thrower. You can't always rely on your opponent to do massive damage to your troops. Sometimes, you just have to do a job yourself.

Correct; per 8th edition Spell Targeting rules you are not allowed to target spells at units in combat.

Unless the spell specifically allows you to, or if it is the proper spell type.

The 13th Spell has no defined type, nor does it contain language stating it can be targeted at units in combat. So no dice.

HOWEVER: If the unit you wish to target is only in combat with slaves (and only slaves), then you are allowed to target spells at that enemy unit (thus making the 13th viable to go into combat), {{because of slaves' specific rules for ranged attacks into combat.}}

So into combat with the 13th spell = No ... unless that combat is only against your slaves.

No, as you cannot target your own units with it, however if you are fighting your opponents slaves can become CRs.

Now that we have a firm grasp on what I meant thanks to Razuli;

is that how that would work? slaves locked into combat with say arbitrary number of bad guys 4d6 slaves become clan rats, and 4d6 enemies or randomize 4 d 6 of each?

Nobody said that. You transmogrify 4D6 models from a single enemy infantry unit. That's it.

You don't cast on your own Slaves. You cast on the enemy unit they're locked in combat with your slaves. Slaves special rules allow you to target enemy units locked in combat with your slaves (there can be no other units of your own in that same combat, be it characters in the slave unit, or another unit in the flank/rear).

That is what was meant by 'and only slaves'.

Ah right I get it now, thanks! So I turn D6 of my slaves into stormvermin, who are ethereal and can fly, and 3D6 enemy units have their stats reduced to 1 for the remainder of the game? Is that correct? :lol:
