So I had a game yesterday where I used slaves for the first time... What an amazing unit, for the price they managed to hold off chaos warriors and warhounds/chaos knights for 2-3 turns each. All the while my cannon and weapons teams peppered whoever was engaged with them! The main reason I never really used them was the fact that I didn't have the models, but then I realized I had about 50 Giant rat models which I could just proxy in and so I did ![]() Most of my Giant Rat models are actually from the Plague Monk sprues which seem to come with loads of litte rats as extras! I have a massive 30k battle coming up next month ( 5v5 at 5k each) and I was only gonna take a single unit but now I am thinking 3 or 4 units of 40 will be the way forward.... |

I'm glad yet another Skaven player has been proved the tactical value of slaves in ones army . But don't waste them all in combat, we'll need plenty of slaves for Vermintide .Flem, |

Unless Flem is referring to the feastday whereby the Horned Rat manifested in person after a ceremony involving the sacrifice of many slaves. But yeah, slaves are very useful given the right strategy. Though they don't seem as popular in the current edition due to changes made to their rules (their former strategies became largely unuseable when the rules changed). |

I was talking about both the events as both of them will need tons of slaves (although the first one might provide some slaves). But yeah slaves are great and have a multitude of uses in any Skaven army(many uses do mean the slaves eventually die ). From tarpit to shield for another more expensive unit.Flem, |

My slaves really haven't done that well for me. I have 40 models that that I either combine into a hord or split into two 20-rat blocks, but neither arrangement seems overly effective. I suppose it could also be tactics, I generally use them to try and tarpit heavy hitting targets, like HE swordsmasters, who kebob them in 1-2 rounds. Any suggestions? |

Slaves are incredibly "popular" in the competitive scene, for their effectiveness, but at the same time are disliked by fluff adherents, who don't believe that Skaven (and Slaves in particular) are accurately represented by being able to be Leadership 10 with a Re-Roll from a Standard. Multiple blocks of 40, with musician and possibly shields based on personal preference. With a LD7 General, 3 ranks and a BSB, they are the ultimate tarpit. -Blader |

You're dividing them up in the wrong way. You can't tarpit with a 20 model unit, and you can't get enough extra kills by hording up with a bunch of pathetic weaklings. Use all 40 in one unit, but don't go horde with them. The only way you're gonna tarpit someone is if you stay steadfast, and considering that a unit like Swordmasters is going to strip away 10-12 models per turn (aka 1-2 ranks) you need to start with a lot more ranks than your opponent has. |
