Warlord
Last night, my warlock Engineer and I were having a pic nic in the open field. (A troop of 5 highelfs had just passed by and since we were with 200 clanrats we figured...why not give it a try). Not much meat on those high elfs...but at least their horses were worth the 27 clanrats we lost in combat.

So with a nice raw horse liver in my one paw and a piece of elven brain (you d expect them to have more brain, wouldnt you?) in the other, my warlock engineer started talking about boats.
"Whats the ONE thing all skaven want?" he started
"Food."
"beside that."
"euhm... more food?"
"forget about the food."
"uhm pfheuf fuh" (sorry, its hard talking with a mouthfull of liver)
"What all Skaven want is Warpstone."
"Oh yeah...that too. And food of course."
"Now think of this. We all know our world is above water and that theres water all over the place. Approximately 50 percent of our entire world is made of water. Now, we find our warpstone from meteorites that fall out of the skies and"
"Wait wait... is this gonne be one of those endlessly long technical discussions i wont understand at all?"
"Euhm... yes."
"Darn... do we have any more booze?"
"Look. Us rats...i mean , Skaven, we go looking for warpstone under the earth or whenever there is a meteor falling. But since half our world is water, this means that half the meteorites fall into the water. In the seas."
"Ah, i think i m getting at what you re thinking. You want the entire skaven race to start drinking sea water, so that all the seas fanish and we can pick the warpstones that fell into the sea."
At that point I got a startled look from my warlock engineer. "Have you ever tried to drink from the sea? Fishes pee in that, you know..."
"Yeah ok, but ...i recogn you want to fish the warpstone out of the oceans, right?"
"Right...with a boat."
"A boat? "
"Yes... better even... a boat that sinks. So we can get to the bottom of the ocean."
At that point i was beginning to regret having paid 200 skaven slaves to hire this warlock engineer. "A sinking boat... my my, thats euhm... interesting."
"Yes, we would go to the bottom of the ocean, pick up the warpstones and bring them back to the surface. "
"In a sinking boat?"
"Exactly."

I m not gonna bore you all with the rest of the story, but basically, the warlock engineer got interrupted by a 200 strong elven army that wanted revenge for their fallen comrades. So i did what every General would do in my situation. I sent out all my troops to meet the enemy and snuck out through the woods myself.

But the talk made me wondering. Since i m all new at this and havent seen many Skaven settlements yet... do we Skaven have boats?
and if so? does anyone have pictures of those boats?
And further more?
Would it be possible to make a seasiege somehow? ( and can someone pronounce the word seasiege 10 times without biting his tongue?)
What would the rules be for sieges from one boat to another?

And can someone tell me, if your warlock engineer (worth 200 slaves) dies , can we get a refund from clan skryre?

Skaven do indeed have boats. There are two main clans that deal them profusely: Clan Sleekit and Clan Skurvy. Sleekit man (rat?) the waterways of the UnderEmpire, think Canal boats and Barges; whereas Skurvy are more seafaring. The boats themselves will either be stolen from the various surface-dwellers or be anything from ramshackle leaky-tubs to iron-clad behemoths (only slightly ramshackle :P ) depending on which Skaven you hire and how much you pay him ;)

There was a topic about building a Skaven Steamship a while ago which may inspire you.

Seasieges... I assume you mean naval battles? GW did release a naval battle game called Man'O'War though you'll be hard pressed to find a copy. There should be a fair bit of discussion about it tucjed away in General Wargaming somewhere. Alternatively if you want to use boats in WFB then you could try making up house rules for them.

As for submarines, if they're good enough for Jules Verne they're good enough for us :P I'm sure Skryre Engineers are inventive enough to build them.

Oh, and as your Skryre representive, I'm afraid we have a no refunds policy on all of our contracts and furthermore, as the Engineer was on loan to you, we require another 200 slaves as payment for damages ;)

Totally not a magpie

Matik has pretty much covered it, though I will add there is a submersible Skaven ship in Elfslayer. It supposedly cost many warptokens to hire (spoiler: all but bankrupting Thanquol) and was still very ramshackle.

I euhm, euhhhhh *starts sweating* ... djee, where did i leave those 200 slaves?
Will you settle for a pair of hardly worn sandals instead?

Thanks for the update on boats. I think its time for my army to assault an elvendock somewhere along the shore line.

Quiet, I'm plotting.

If you want a boat that sinks, then the Dwarf-things have just what you are looking for.

The Nautilis, from the Dwaf Man-O-War fleet.

Actually, the Book of the Rat (as unofficial as it might be) mentioned clan Gristle from out of Putrid Sump as a water-faring clan as well, transporting goods from undergrounds lairs to one another through the underground rivers. Basically similar to clan Sleekit, though I just don't favour the Children of the Horned Rat WHFRPG supplement very much.

Sea sieges indeed have Man 'o War coming closest by in terms of a system, yet the Empire in Flames supplement for the Mordheim system has rules for boats on rivers. Perhaps that might be interesting to look into?

I think i m a bit too much into pirates of the carribean, right now. I cant help thinking those skaven look a lot like pirates and somehow i thought it would be nice to give them a pirate ship along the way to rob other ships from their goods. Since most other races seem to have ships, i wondered just how Skaven ships look like.
I m not putting my rats in anything a Dwarf build so that naughty thing isnt working for me.
As a huge fan of clan moulder, perhaps I should ask the clanleaders whether it wouldnt be possible to tame a whale.
But thanks for the advice anyway.

It all started by me wondering how the hell the skaven got all the way to the island of blood (and where is that island on the map? )
You cant tunnel towards an island in the midst of an ocean...
(I tried as a six year old...Allthough i must admit that Australia might have been a bit out of my league, since im from Europe...)

Here's a link to a GW article where someone themed their army around Clan Skurvy (the pirate clan ;) ) Linky.
As mentioned a lot of Skaven boats will either be stolen (Empire boats most likely) or if built from scratch will likely be based on the designs of other races plus whatever additions a skaveny mind can think of.

As for getting to the IoB, there was actually a tunnel :P It's all covered in the short novel that was released at the same time ;)

Yep. The tunnel was just like the channel tunnel. 's a good Black Library book as they go.

There was a thread on this over on Ulthuan with some experimental house rules. Might be handy if your opponent's an Elf thing.

I think there was something about the Skaven being interested in submersibles so they could bypass the Emerald Gates of Ulthuan (since Ulthuan actually floats on the water) and terrorize the inner sea.

There was also a random timeline entry somewhere I remember which details a Dark Elf corsair raving about things with 'needle sharp fangs' which came from below apparently although it may possibly have been a reference to the fishpeople.

But yes, death to the elf-things! (I think... ^o) )

Mutate: I also meant to say that I absolutely loved the bit of intro fluff! :D If I were on the Council it would be forbidden to start a topic without a similar piece! :P
