Amount of Packmasters in a Rat Ogre and Giant Rat pack

For the last two weeks now , me and my packmasters are having a hard discussion. Since they have wips and prods which they tend to use on me , every time i raise the issue, ... i thought about asking the rest of the warlords.

The packmasters claim that they have a union for which they pay 1 paw of warplock each year. According to that union and its union rules, packmasters dont have to fight when there arent enough of giant rats or ogre rats to lead.
Now, i dont want a general strike on my hands , cause those packmasters are good buddies with my Warlock engineer (mostly cause he buys them drinks every day ...after which they are all too drunk and fail miserably on the battle field...) and they do a good job of keeping the rats of out my garden and away from my chickens (and their eggs).

So I bought one of those union rule books (aka Skaven Army book) and there I read this (yes... i can read...) :

A pack consists of one packmaster and at least five giant rats. Any number of giant rats can be added to the unit. Additional packmasters may be added, but no more than one packmaster per every 5 giant rats. (page 103 of skaven army book )

So the question is : as soon as i put 6 giant rats in one unit... how many packmasters am i allowed to insert in the unit.
My packmasters reason : 5 full giant rats = 1 packmaster. So they claim they only need 1 packmasters up on to 9 giant rats.
I reason : 1 giant rat= 1 packmaster. 2 giant rats = 1 packmaster... 5 giant rats= 1 packmaster , 6 giant rats = 2 packmasters since thats the start of the next 5 giant rats.

And also...that talk about a Skaven union for packmasters... is that true?

The New Lunar Republic!
You'd be allowed two, since you already have the 5 needed for the first, the second has a rat to take care of. Of course, you only ever want one packmaster for a rat dart anyway, to save points.

You can have a unit of 5 grats and 2 pm I think, it's also written somewhere in the FAQ.

There is no union for packmasters,

My advice, kill your packmasters, and replace them with more *cough* loyal *cough* ones

And yet another newbie question. (i m very good at that kind of questions...)

It says in my armybook that giant rats have to charge when they can (if they ran out of packmasters).
I m a bit confused by that. A giant rat has movement 6 . With two dice to roll that means i can get up to 18 inches in total, right?
Does that mean that, whenever something is within 18 inches of my giant rats, i m forced to charge? Or is it when something is at 8 inches (sinec, with 2 dice and M6 thats the minimum distance to charge, right?)

And lets throw in one more extra question :

Is it possible to make a unit of only packmasters?

The rest of the post isn't worth posting, so we've removed it.

I'm not sure I would agree with this tbh, I think the rule is trying to give the same requirements as frenzy does, i.e if you are able to make a charge move then you are forced to. If you then fail the charge for some reason then that is not your fault.

However that said the Skaven book was a 7th edition book and the rule is badly worded so I guess you could argue it either way. The rules are not clear in this matter. If I were you and you think it is something that might come up then talk it over with your opponent before the game.

I think the 18" potential charge range is the best way to play it as the 8" one seems very cheap (cheat-y) to me.

I agree with spikedog's interpretation, only more strongly. The Rat Pack rule (p. 54) dictates that if all Packmasters and Master Moulders are dead, the unit moves automatically towards the nearest enemy unit, and must attempt a charge if it is possible to attempt a charge. The Rat Pack rule hasn't been changed by a FAQ, and it actually seems pretty clear to me: the rats, left to their own devices, move towards the nearest enemy and charge if at all possible.

A unit of Giant Rats must include at least five Giant Rats, and at least one Packmaster or Master Moulder. There are no units composed entirely of Packmasters.
