So I've been having a really hard time figuring out which other army I'd like to build. I don't really have a lot of cash to throw around, and I'm driving all my friends nuts trying to talk to them about it. So if anyone wants to take some time to help me out, that'd be awesome. I really like the way skaven play, but i'd like another choice so I can kinda change the scenery a bit. So far I know I don't like Dwarves, I like the artillery, but all the Dwarf units are pretty much the same. But other then that I'm pretty open to any suggestions. I'd prefer to stay away from the elves and human armies. I think I have it boiled down to Ogre Kingdoms, and Beastmen. But I'm not sure what they both play like. Anyone care to sum up both armies playstyles? THanks! |

Beastmen are a hard army to use right, though they have their strengths (Minotaurs, Deadly Chariots in Core and rock hard characters to name three), and when used well they do wonderful things. That said, they have a rather steep learning curve amongst Warhammer armies, so should not be jumped into without consideration. Ogre Kingdoms are an enigma however, as they have a new book coming out. If Ogres and Beastmen are your considerations, I say wait until you get to read the new Orge book, then choose. -Blader |

As blader said the beasts are solid but you need to have a plan and stick to the plan with them if it doesn't work you change the plan for next time. They have a lot going for them. Personally I would never choose ogres and in the current situation I would at least wait for the book. If in doubt skaven though not that I am bias much

Personally i would say Beastmen. One of my funnest games has been played against them The models are pretty cool, and the variety of tactics and playing styles you can do is extensive

Honestly, both armies are pretty difficult to use. As people said, Beastmen need a plan and need to stick to it. With Ogres you need to learn how to use a few small, really hard hitting units. If you can't afford much, I'd say go with Ogres once they get their new book. Back when the Battalion Box was available, you could buy that, a tyrant and a butcher and have a 1500pt army. |

Uhm, I don't know why Beastmen need more of a plan than other armies? The new beastmen are actually very dependable if you stay within the reach of your BSB and general. Primal Fury is a great rule for the infantry that mean that if you make a Ld test in the start of the combat phase (and this is pretty easy with re-rollable Ld9) you have Hatred. Since this reset it mean that you will hate your enemy almost every turn, and not just the first turn of combat. Beastmen benefit from having large combat blocks since they have little or no armour, but T4 plus good access to magical augments mean they're quite hard to kill (at least for normal infantry), and all those rerollable attacks mean you will kill a lot. A unit of Bestigors six wide will consistently get 8-9 wounds a turn from almost any opponent with lots of hits and S6. Beastmen are still underestimated by many since the army was released in 7th but largely written for 8th, and the lack of obvious killer-combos meant that they were written off as bad. I play both skaven and beastmen and they're quite different but both are very fun. I'd suggest a visit to the Herdstone forum, we have some good guides for budding beast generals. As to the ogres it's very hard to know since they'll get a new armybook in a few weeks. |

Considering that one of your arguments to start a new army is that you want to change your scenery a bit, I'd suggest going for the Ogre Kingdom. Choosing yet another army of brown-furred critters might bore you to death when it comes to painting. But as previously said, wait until the new armybook hits the shelves. | |

Assuming you go with the minority that paint skin and fur brown. My own beastmen have yellow skin and dark brown fur, I know of armies with all colours of the rainbow for skin and fur, white, red, black, blue, grey, green, brown, orange, purple and so on and so forth. Fantastical skin colour is much more common in beastmen armies, compared to skaven armies.
